Tweeter crackles...what now?

I drove the 4Runner to work this morning. On the way, I decided to listen to some music. When I turned it up, one of the tweeters started crackling. No real sound came out of it, just a bunch of crackling and static.
What's wrong?

EDIT: Guess I should clarify what I'm running-
Sony HU
Pioneer components
MTX Thunder 4122 2-channel amp

I've only used the system like 4 times, now. Last week it was working perfect. This morning, nothin' but crackling out of the left tweeter.

If there anyway way to fix this?

Hook up the tweeter up to another amp. If it still crackles the same then it's the tweet. If it's ok, then check the amp, and finally the headunit. I'd venture to say the tweeter is shot though. Which model HU do you have? I have Sony's CDX-M730.

Check for a loose connection or short in the speaker wire. Sounds to me like its partially disconnected and grounding out.

It was Placido Domingo, and NO!

It was grounding out. I didn't think it would be blown. I toyed with the adjustments and noticed all the sound from the left channel was trying to come from the tweeter, bass and all. Took the door panel apart and noticed the terminals on the speaker were grounding on the metal door frame. I little trimming and some electrical tape and it's good to go.
