Subwoofer Amplifier

Hi, I'm looking to get an apline type-r 12" (1242d) and I don't know how powerful of an amp to get. I had one with a mrp-m450 and it wasn't too bad. Either a mrp-m500 or a mrp-m850. Both go for about the same price online and I don't know if I should get the more powerful one. It's going in my xtra cab pickup.

type r's can handle the power. go with the bigger one. its always better to have headroom. overpowering rarely kills speakers. underpowering/clipped signal does

Thanks for the reply. I need help with the enclosure. I'm building one for it myself. I ended up buying a mrp-m1000 amp which wil be giving out 1000w at 2ohms. The box will be sealed. What size in cubic feet should the box be? I want it to be setup for rap music.

you need to find the specs for your sub, It will tell you exactly how big CU" wise the INSIDE of the box needs to be.

if you MUST go sealed, i'd go with a box on the bigger side if you like rap music.

ideally, for rap, you would want to go ported. for a 12, the box would probably run between 1.5-2.5 ft^3 net. iirc, type r's prefer boxes on the smaller side, so maybe 1.75 tuned to 35 for some nice output.

I'd love to go with a ported enclosure although I have a pickup and the rear seat area is small and I still use it sometimes so a ported enclosure would take up too much space. You said type-r's prefer smaller boxes does that also go for sealed boxes?
