Fronts- 4" (technically 4T)
Rear sides- some oddball size that should be disregarded and get 6 1/2's from crutchfield. They supply the wiring adaptor and pre-drilled template for mounting. Depth is the limiting factor here and Crutchfield will tell you which ones fit.
Far rears- 2"? Not really sure, but there's no direct fit replacement regardless. You could "almost" put some 3.5's in there, but it'd be close. I gave those speakers and the harness to my friend so I guess I'll see what he comes up with.

Basically all you need to know is at crutchfield. Just use the "What Fits My Vehicle" function. They don't list anything for the "rear rear" presumably because there isn't anything that fits. But then again, maybe they don't know they exist!

As far as products go I really like my Panasonic head unit I got from crutchfield. So much so that I talked a friend into putting one in his 94 4Runner as well. For the money they have the highest MOSFET wattage output @ 25x4 RMS.
We both went with 6 1/2's in the rear. I personally got some ˟˟˟˟˟ty Blaupunkts that were free with a ˟˟˟˟˟ty Blaupunkt head unit I had to send back twice. He on the other hand got Infinity Reference shallow-mounts and I must say- if you can afford $100 for a pair of speakers it's money well spent.

While I'm on the subject, he also got another pair of Infinity's to mount in the front doors. I believe there's a tech article on here documenting this mod. You may want to consider ditching the 4's in the front for some 5 1/4's or 6 1/2's in the doors. Just depends on how much modifying you're willing to do.

I'll stop my rambling now, but my friend and I have been spending much time and thought about how to get the best sound quality out of our 4Runners. So I know a little about how to go about things, but I'm learning more every day...

yeah I got my speakers from crutchfield too. I got 6.5's for the back and they provided what i needed for mounting. I also got 4" speakers for the front. They fit in the box. Unfortunately the 6.5s didn't give me the improvment i expected. I'm making a box for them based on the 5.25" stock box.

I vaguely remember hearing about speakers in those vents in the back. Part of some package that included mini amps on the 5.25" boxes.

You may or may not have rear tweets, depending on wether or not your rig came from the factory with the premium sound package. Look at the rear cargo light. If you see 2 "grills" with sound coming out of them on the same piece of plastic that the carge light is on you have the tweets. If that piece is bare except for the light (no grills), you dont have the tweets. The "grills" on the far saide of the rear cargo area are just air vents.

SOund system on 95 runner, replacing premium sound stock

There arent any tweeters in the back. Thats a whole nother project. The rear speakers suposedly take 5.25 with modification to the encloser, and the front can take a 3.5-4 inch.

FWIW, my 94 4runner came with 4" with boxes in the front, 5.25" with box/amp in the back and no tweeters. I still have the "grille" cutout in the back above the tailgate though, but nothing inside.

You're right Corey has a tech write-up on this. The premium sound/CD player package came with the tweets in the rear cargo light panel. I seem to remember something about all 2nd gens having tweeter wiring installed even if you didn't get the premium sound package. Maybe I'm thinking of the wiring for the rear roof mounted stop light which didn't start till '93 but you can easily add one to a '92 cause its already there
If you really want to get into the stereo stuff, post a question or search in the stereo section, you'll get so much info there your brain will start to hurt!!

You're right about the harness still being there. That's why I gave mine to a friend. He's going to use the brackets, harness, and stock speakers (for now) to come up with a better system. He's already got the plug and holes for the brackets drilled- took me all of 5 minutes to remove it from my vehicle, should take about the same to install it in his.

speakers

I have a 92 runner. After i replaced the stock head unit, i installed a pair of 6x9,s in the rear cargo storage doors on the sides and stuffed the the compartment's with poly stuffing. The front speakers i raided out of a bone yard rig brany newby's Bostons and the vsv's for the 4 wheel all for $10.00. Got to admit they sound even better when thier next to free and besides witch i'm already deaf as a post so i don,t need anything fancy.

I don't know if this is any help to the 4R crowd, or not, but I've had excellent luck with Infinity Kappa series in my '90 SR5 Pick-up. I put 4" two ways in the dash (only had to clip two bracket holes on the speaker for a perfect fit). In the back I mounted a pair of 6 1/2" 3 ways. They were a little more work as I has to use a die grinder to enlarge the hole in the sheet metal about a 1/16" all the way around, then I cut the grilles out of the factory speaker covers, and replaced them with flat, perforated speaker grille metal, to make room for the mid and tweeter.

This setup sounds great (Pioneer headunit with 45W per channel), and it's wonderfully low key (read: not theft tempting). If this isn't direct help, I hope that it gives some ideas! Good luck!

So, I've searched around a bunch to find info on replacing the rear speakers in a 2nd Gen 4Runner, but I'm still looking for any tips or a write up on placing new speakers in the stock rear boxes after a bit of modification. I've heard you can put 5 1/2's back there but has anyone put 6 1/2's or 6x9's into the stock plastic speaker boxes after cutting out a bigger hole? Thanks.

I ended up using a dremel to widen the original speaker holes so I could fit 5 1/4's in there. Worked great!

they are vents in some 2nd generation runners. in the top of the line models you get 4 inch in front 5.25 in rear and tweeters in the top panel in teh very back of your truck. the models that came with them as vents can have tweeters put in the wiring should be there and if its not the plug will be on the harness by the speakers.

Awesome read up. Planning on doing my set up soon. I was really debating on doing a custom 6 1/2 component set up on my front doors because my panels are in very good condition. My friend does really good custom work when it comes to Car audio. But I still want to keep everything looking factory with no cutting or exposing. For the people in here that changed out your front 4" speakers in the dash, did it make a difference? Are you amplifying it? Or running it off the Aftermarket HU? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Aloha.
