The two back ones up high are tweeters. At least thats how it is on my 93. Its a factory "component" system.
Has anyone ever put 5.25"s in the front? I am looking for components (seperate woofers and tweeters) for the front but not many companies make 4" component systems.

The fronts a 4 inch the back and NOT 4 inch they are 5 3/4 i think. Im putting infinity Kappa 4 inch int he front, Ill custom fit some pioneer 6x9s, and then ill custom mount some tweeters inthe back.

on my 95 i have the 6 speaker setup its 4" up in front 5 1/4 in the rear and the tweeters are 2" up in the corners and if you get component speakers for the rear you can wire the tweeters in the corners

And again!
I'd like to replace the rear speakers in my '93 SR5 pickup. They are the same as the ones used in 4Runners. They are odd sized and regular 4" speakers are too small 5 1/4 speakers are too big...
Anybody knows what would fit perfectly in the rear speaker boxes (the boxes aren't the same as those in 4Runners but the speakers are the same).

not that its in a timely manner, but since Ive gotten so much help here I thought I would pass it along.. Not sure about other gens, but I have a 2nd gen 95 model 4runner and the speaker sizes are 100% 4" in the front and 4" in the back.. ALL my interior panels are off and I am looking right at them, i got burnt when buying the wrong size yesterday b/c i trusted audio wesbites like crutchfield.. The truth is, some have a 4 speaker system that include 4" in the back and some 2nd gens have 6 speakers that incluide larger ones..

I have 1992 4Runner speakers on my desk right now and their speaker cones have 4" diameter but their external diameter is 4⅝" at the thinnest point to 5¼" where the screws are. The new replacement 4" speakers I tried didn't seal correctly in the housings as they were round with 4 small tabs for the screws.

I'm going to try out a pair of vinyl coated ANGLED mounts for 6x9's in the rear. Shouldnt have to damage any of the trim.

5 1/4" in the front...
know crutchfield has an adaptor for 5 1/4 for the front of a 90 4runner but it's $25 so tomorrow i am going to see if i can make them fit since i already have really nice polk speekers and kenwood head unit let you know how my install goes tomorrow!

Another option...This is an example of a low-ish cost, under $500, audio solution that bumps up the existing factory system. I didn't want a sub box floating around taking up cargo space and screaming PLEASE TAKE ME! Since my installation, some components have been discontinued but I'm sure replacement components are available at equal or lesser cost.
New audio components:
Pioneer TSG1044 4" front speakers-$40 (these were blown, all other stock speakers still worked well)
Sony CDXGT820IP deck-$200 (powers tweets and mids)
Rockford Fosgate Punch Amp P325.2-$100 (powers sub)
Kicker Sub CVT651-$70 (this was the lowest profile sub I could find that fit within the existing space)
Misc. wire and materials-$60

I have an SR5 (94) It already has an aftermarket stereo setup - so I don't think i'll have to do any crazy re-wiring as the rear speakers are already firing. I am going to redo it all and ditch the outdated head unit it has in it. with a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X996 (or X796 - still decieding between the 2), polk audio dxi400's in the dash and some components in the rear (probably 6 3/4"). I was wondering if its possible to rig 6x9's in the rear. The amp I am going to be using eventually is Kenwood Excelon X700-5 (and adding a sub if i don't like the bass production). It would be real nice to go with 6x9's I remmember my friend had a set in the back of his car way back in the day that used to produce better bass than a 8" sub.
