My dad has a 1991 p/u 4x4 v6 xcab. He installed a pioneer deck a while ago.The problem is, that when ever you shut off the truck (take out key, or just no turn off the truck) the radio resets. This happends everytime. I looked, he cut the old harness, and neatly made good ones directly to the pioneer deck. Evey time just to turn on the radio, we have to push the on butten, and set everyting. Works all fine, then when truck turned off, it all reset again. Any one know what is the problem? There is usually two 12v wires connected to the back of the deck.

One is 12v source all the time (constant). The other is 12v only when key is "on" or in the "acc" position.

I am guessing it is miswired so the 12v switched lead from the truck is wired to the constant, or the 12v constant has been missed entirely. Could also be a blown fuse, but I'll assume you have checked those already.

Either way, you need to download the wiring diagram for your deck (model number) from pioneer.com and get your deck a constant source of 12v so it remembers presets, etc., when the key goes off.

At least... all this is my best guess to the problem.

 

yea i see the 12 volt and acc. from the deck. My dad hooked those together to the cigirate lighter thingy. Then just today i played around try hooking it up to different places, and the only way it works if 12 volt, and acc. is both toghether w/ same 12 v. constant. Also i tried to check the fuses... I didnt see anything for the radio. Well it was late and dark, so i was lazy to check the manual. lol. But thanskx for info

 

ok i got the instructions from the web site. Ok now that i see, I have to connect the acc. wire to the ignition right? And 12 v constant to the battery wire... I bought the clip on harness for the truck that shows which wires should be which, but im not to sure. I spent maybe 2 hours trying to cennect different wires with what i could find. Ohh and also, i think my dad connected a wrong wire. I think he connected the system control wire,which that i read from the manual is suppose to be connected to the amp lol. And i think the system control is connected to either the 12 volt constant, or the ignition. The wire for it (from the truck) is pretty thick. So my guess would maybe be its the 12 v constant? Oh and another thing, is the ground wire suppose to be connected with the original ground, or was my dad suppose to make its own grounding.Thanks

 

I am not an audio expert, but it sounds like you are on the right track. Although I would suggest getting a volt meter to figure out what is going on instead of just wiring things together and seeing what happens... could damage the deck.

Get a voltmeter ($15 or less from auto parts store or maybe even WalMart). Black lead to a ground, and then red lead to various incoming wires. You should see 12v from one lead all the time, this would be your constant. You should also find one lead that goes on and off with the position of the key, that is your switched. Once you have those, just refer to the manual and hook things up.

Yes, system control wire is for amp, power antenna, etc. That sends power from the deck, and should not receive power. If you have no stereo accessories, just do not connect but don't leave the wire bare.

A ground is a ground, although some grounding points can introduce "noise" into the system. There should be a ground wire from the original harness and I'd use that one when you find it. Use your voltmeter to figure that out.

If you don't want a voltmeter, pull a bulb from turn siganl or overhead lamp. Tape some wires to the contacts and use that to "see" current. Bulb lights: you've got power. Test your bulb-o-meter on the battery contacts first to make sure you've got things connected correctly.

 

On most pioneer decks, you will have 4 wires that don't go to the speakers.
1st-Your black wire, this is your ground. It can go to the frame, body panel, batt. negative, ect...
2nd-Your power (red) this one normally goes to the ignition switched power.
3rd- The blue wire is your accessory or your pwr antenna, power supply from the radio,
4th-A orange or yellow wire which is for the clock and the memory, this wire goes to the constant 12v supply, (usually goes directly to the battery) or another constant 12v source. This is the one that will hold the presets in the radio as well as the clock, and keep them from reseting.
