New alternator?

Hi I have a Hifonics 1000wt amp, a kicker s12l7, and a 1990 toyota 4runner

Will i need a new alternator for this set up? I dont want too much dimming....but a little is acceptable for a while until i find a way to patch it up.

How old are is your charging system?

You might be able to work with an optima battery as long as your alternator is not on it's way out already. You can also try upgrading all of your battery power, ground, and alternator connections with thicker higher quality wire (and gold plated battert terminals).

As long as you are not driving around all day blasting test tracks, you should be ok (but that setup might overwhelm your mids/highs).

Well the alternator is relatively new...(6 months old at the most) but i didnt install the alternator, the guy i bought my car from did it himself, but i believe it is rated at more than 60 amps....but im not really sure.

I hope it works...i really dont want to plunk down big money for the new alternator...but i will if its needed.

With an 80 amp alternator and a deep cycle battery, you should be alright. Again, a cheaper fix could always be upgrading the wiring (grounds, power leads, etc) in your engine compartment if you are still having trouble.

I am currently running a 900 watt (true power) amp in mine with a stock (but most parts recently replaced, little bit better battery) electrical system, and it holds up pretty well. If I play it at almost max power I have some problems, but for daily driving I can't complain.

To keep your amp getting the best voltage(about 14.7 or so) you really need more than 80 amps. If you dont plan on competing then you should be ok.
