Hardwiring stereo

Hardwiring stereo
Have any of you guys hardwied your stereos to your trucks? I didn't have anything there when I got it, so I don't have anything to reference. I have a white wire with black srtipe, black wire with white stripe, green wire with brown dashes, and a pkain red wire to work with. I need to know what wires the illumination, constant, and ground are. I don't have acces to a multimeter either and can't seem to find any real answers anywhere else.

Might help to know just what vehicle in your fleet we are working on.
What happened to the factory plug.??
run your own ground left door post is good .
switched power out of the left kick panel as well as the constant power.
break down and buy a multimeter there is no excuse to not have at the least one.

it's my 84 dlx and and there wasn't a factory plug when I got it. I already have a ground for extra cab lights nearby, but I don't know what wires are the switched or constant. I just want to use the available wire from th harness because I'm still sorting out the previous owners wiring mess under the dash ( almost everythinh has been cut and rerouted or changes colors).

Here's a link to the factory wire colors. Why don't you wire in the factory plug for the 87+ Toyota? The wire colors seem to be the same. You can get the factory end as well as the radio end from eBay or a good stereo shop. That way the future owner of your truck won't be on here badmouthing you:

I found that diagram elsewhere and I don't have wiring with most of those colors though. I think I'll go by the junkyard in a few days to see if I can find a stock harness since nobody really knows what colors are what.

Yea i need a little help on this topic. I am sorry first for reviving a dead post. I traded a 91 camaro rs for my 95 yota dlx. original owner had the aftermarket stereo wired to the fuse box by driver's kick panel??? I got a pioneer to replace the other and there is no harness or wires that would be a radio. only thing original is the antennae plug. What min gauge wire to use to straight wire the radio, not intending to sell at all either so I am gonna hardwire. I tried searching for where the wires start at but cant find anything on it, cause I was thinking of re-wiring it factory, but i think it easier to hardwire. any insight or better way to do this project, lemme know. thanks

Welcome to YT!
personally, I would not hard-wire my stereo just in case it either gets left on or in case someone wants to touch it and drain my battery for me. ALWAYS make sure the power is protected by a proper amperage fuse, regardless of it being from the actual fuse panel or an aftermarket type. IIRC, there SHOULD be a harness in the dash to attach a stereo, but technically it's not necessary since all it does is clean up the wires and make it a plug-in friendly setup. I'm not 100% on this, but I think there is a fuse for the stereo head unit in the kick panel fuse box in the cab. Perhaps your current stereo is already connected to this power supply, which is good since it will most likely turn off with the ignition, which is good. As for wire, I believe 18ga is pretty standard, but you could always go slightly thicker, just make sure it's stranded wire (lower number is thicker, and higher strand count the better quality).
there are plenty of threads here on YT regarding electronics and stereo wiring. there's also the ever-helpful Google. you should easily be able to locate a wiring diagram with an image search. try searching and see what comes up. if nothing helps, then ask again and hopefully we can get you pointed in the right direction. there's also a link to the FSM for our rigs - you should download a copy if you don't have a manual yet.

Thanks for the welcome. I have no harness there and hardwiring in a sense I was gonna use 10 gauge stranded to bridge into the wiring that goes to the fuse panel but not directly into the fuses. My camaro almost burned up from previous owner doing that. I have only 2 small gray wires in console hanging but under glove box there are 2 connectors unplugged hanging also?? The wiring diagrams I seen only show color code but not really where they start or terminate at or to. Thanks for advice
