Antenna broken?

I just wanted to get everyones opinion on this problem. I have an aftermarket Sony xplode head unit in my truck. A while ago the radio suddenly did not work very well. I could hear the preset stations i had programmed, but they came in very weak and I could only hear them with the volume turned all the way up. If it try to search for stations it can't find any. My thought is that the antenna is broken or the antenna cord is frayed somewhere. The antenna is an aftermarket antenna, one of the ones that extends to about 6 ft tall that was on the truck when I got it. Do you think it is the antenna and I should just replace it? I have a digital multimeter, is there anyway I can test the continuity of the antenna/cord? I have not had the time to take the dash apart yet or pull the fender liner to look at the antenna yet, just thought I'd post up before going to the parts store. Or, do you think something in the head unit is broken. The head unit is about 9 years old, so I guess i've gotten my moneys worth out of it anyways. Thanks.
