Alpine stereo

Hi, I'm new.

I just bought a '95 4runner. The previous owner installed a huge amp, and "mounted" it in the rear passenger side storage compartment. It was just sitting in there,so any little bump in the road and it was flopping around.

I listen mostly to talk radio, so don't need a amp. I decided to remove it and just wire the speakers straight to the stereo. I took the connections off the amp and just soldered the leads together with the coressponding speaker wire. When I got done and turned on the radio, I had to turn the volume up all the way to even hear anything.

The radio is a Alpine CDA-7840 and has 40W x 4, so it should drive the speakers, right? I have 4 speakers, 2 front, 2 rear.

I didn't pull the radio from the dash, is there some kind of adjustment for using this radio without an amp? Any help will help.

My bet is that the amp was connected to pre-amp outputs.
You need to pull the head unit, and rewire it.
