6" OR 6" x 9" speakers
Anybody have a preferance on what size speakers?
I'm looking for some speakers to put in my '87 4Runner, the 4" stock speakers are just not cutting it. I used to have some Infinity Kappa 6x9 speakers mounted in the back of my '86, and they sounded pretty good, but I have heard that 6" round speakers are of better quality.
Any opinions????

When I opened the board, the first three threads were started by you Steve.
One about Interco tires, one about the rear leaf swap and this one about speakers of all things. I laughed out loud!
I have 6.5" Fosgate unpowered speakers in the rear and 4" in the front. They get the job done and did not break the bank.

Go with 6.5" speakers. 6x9's are going to put out a little more bass, but they will have more distortion in the midbass range. Any speaker that is not round will have some bad distortion. The uneven length from the center to the surround causes it.

It is a matter of preference.
6x9's are typically louder than 6"'s. But 6" COMPONENT speakers typically sound better. Combination 6" are not going to sound as good as component 6" speakers.
I have a 88' 4runner, and this is my set-up. It is very decent sounding, louder than I can listen to and not too expensive.
front dash: Cerwin Vega 4" mids $20 - Ebay
Front doors: Infinity 6" seperates w/ tweeters on top of door $50 - pawn shop
Back seat where rear amrests are: Pioneer 6x9 $40 - Pawn shop
Head unit - pioneer cd $90 - Wal Mart
Amp- Kenwood 260W 4 Channel - $90 - Pawn shop
Soon: dual 8" sub w/ enclosure for back mounted behind roll bar and another amp to power them.
The subs will take alot of the lows from the other speakers, and I will be able to push more power and sound from them without distortion.
I Don't have the dough that some of you suckers, so I have to piece mine together when I find a good deal. But all-in-all it sounds awesome.
Good luck with yours

Because components use better grade part inside of their passive crossovers than a coaxial does, and the sound difference is AMAZING. [Coaxials don't even have crossovers per say, just a cap to filter out lows to the tweet, and an inductive coil to prevent the highs from hitting the woofer - sometimes no inductor is used and it sounds even worse!] (On an intersting side note, a biamped set of separates should also sound phenominal when compared to the passively crossed over alternative, but that is beyond the scope of this topic...)
As far as a mod for the 4Runner 4" there is one...custom kick panels.

I built a set of them around a braxial set of Orion 6.5s, they sound very very good, image beautifully, but are lacking a bit on depth of the sound stage... I can only get the sound to seem like it's coming from half way out on the hood at best.
They are also being run off of a small 25x2 amp.
As far as your HU's "power" don't believe it, as it might put out 25% of what it claims. Do yourself a favor and get an amp to push the 6.5s. From there you can build custom kicks like mine, or just cut a hole in the door for them where the door pocket is. But if you do the latter, it won't image or stage worth a damn.
Here is a link to my page showing off my kicks:

ps - Don't let me even catch you thinking about using oval speakers ever again!!!

....coming from the hood.....HUs...(what are those?). I just wanted some good thunpin sound from some decent speakers. However, thank you very much for the info. How about the Polk Audio db6500 speaker setup??? I saw this on Crutchfield, and they looked pretty good, not that I could afford these right now, but they looked nice.

As far as the imaging and staging deal - those are IASCA terms used to describe the stage that all the sound seems to be emminating from. Ideally, all the sound should seem as though it were coming from beyond the end of the hood, at or above dash height.
Imaging deals with where on the "sound stage" something is located. If a band is recorded using several microphones and the lead singer is at center stage, the drummer and back left, and a sax at the back right, a properly imaging sound system will portray just that - a lead singer close to the center, and drummer off to the left and back a bit, and a sax to the right of center and back a bit. The farther away it all sounds from you the better, hence "...beyond the end of the hood..." comment.
Hope that helped clarify.
