1st Gen 4Runner - Rear speakers - Waterproofing concerns?

What's the word all?

I just purchased an '85 4Runner and low and behold, there are no rear speakers. I plan on putting something back there but here's my concern.

I plan on having the top off a lot during the summer and I don't want to have to remove my speakers when it rains and I have no one around (or are too lazy) to put the top back on.

I figure there are three options, two of which both I'm not that wild about due to sound quality compromises (I think?):

1) Make custom boxes that fit between the roll bars and put speaker terminals into the side panels. That way, they can be removed when it rains and I have the top off. Not sure about sound quality throughout the vehicle with these, always been a skeptic of regular coax's (non-subs) in boxes (think Wal Mart truck boxes in their stereo section).

2) Purchase some marine speakers and install them into the side panels. I don't know if these things would be totally waterproof and I'm not sure of the sound quality or availability from decent manufacturers.

3) Finally, the other option is to redo the entire side panels on the back using sheet metal, diamond plate ($$$$$$), or some sort of wood and then seal the edges with a gasket/weather strip/caulk. This way, I can feel safe putting in nicer car speakers and not have to sacrifice quality.

Any comments on these three options or ideas on what I can do?

Peace,

Justin

go with #2.

If you have the top off, sound quality is kinda "moot".

Marine Speakers at Crutchfield

This isn't an exhaustive search but this is what I found so far. Would it be a better idea for sound quality to mount the speakers on the side panels instead of behind the side panels? I'd reinforce them with something if so but if it's not worth it, I'll just find some way to mount them behind it.

I prefer behind panels, simply to keep the speaker from getting damaged by shifting cargo or "flailing" feet and elbows.
