User options

I've been on the board for quite a while, and have tried to keep up with the overall tone of the members by reading as much as possible. There will always be people that complain and are unhappy, this board is no exception. One observation I have is that most of the drama/problems/negative experiences come from the Off Topic section. Personally I would have no problem getting rid of it completely. but from past threads it looks like many want it to stay. My question and proposal for a possible solution would be to make it possible to choose not to see that particular section. I am lazy and use the "New Posts" or "Today's Posts" buttons to catch up between visits. Is there a way without creating a ton of work to leave out the OT section in those listings. That way myself and others would not see all the posts, but those that enjoy that could simply go to that section to view the threads. Better yet you could choose in the user settings which sections you do or don't see when hitting the new posts button, kind of like the ignore feature but for entire sections. If it's too much work to change then that is understandable, but it sure seems like it would make my experience here more enjoyable, and hopefully do the same for many others. Thanks.

No way to set options so you can not view a certain section with VB software.
When using the view new posts feature, look to the far right to see what section it is in.

As far as getting rid of Off Topic, no way.
That is where everything non Toyota related goes.

Got a problem with your dishwasher, carpet, anything not related to the up keep of a Toyota can go in there.

Every forum needs an OT area.
Many of us here have interests in common besides Toyotas such as computers, hence why I also setup the PC section here.

OK, I understand that software has it's limitations.
As far as NEEDING an OT area, not sure I agree with you but it's not my decision. Given the choice I would not vote to get rid of it, but it seems that many days I'm not in the mood to sift through all of it to look at Toyota topics, which is what I come here for. I guess the politics and drama, both here and elsewhere, have gotten to me lately and I was just looking for an easy fix. Thanks for the reply.

hey greg,

now there's also the "ignore" feature that you could use too. often times its not the forum as a whole that is the problem, but rather certain people in the forum that causes the forum to be unbearable for some.

Yeah, there's a couple on my list.
I find there are certain threads that most of the posts are blocked, go figure, and it would just be nice to be able to put the whole thread on ignore.

This is where we disagree.
I am not going to join up on another forum to ask a question on whether the new DVD Batman is worth renting or not.

Why not ask it here in the "Off Topic" section, as there are many members here who have seen the movie.

Get my drift?

Posting such a question in the 4Runner section would be purely stupid, hence the OT section.

Understood. I don't rely on the "net" for information very often, outside of the couple of offroad boards I visit, so I don't see the OT section as a source of information like others do. Probably comes from being on dial-up for so long I just got tired of waiting for an answer.

Just look over on the right side of your screen and if it says "off topic" then you know not to click on that post.

I enjoyed it. Worth renting.

Greg - with the enforcement of the "no ambiguous titles" rule, it should be easier for you to pick and choose what is worth reading without opening the thread.

As far as the drama - it comes in waves. It will subside and/or the purveyors of the drama will disappear....**ABRACADABRA**

The OT section is AWESOME.. Yes i do own a toyota... thats how i found this site.. but from every forum iv been to.. these people on this one have been the MOST helpful.. least the people that respawned... People question my 4runner like.. they usually all agree that its not redneck (which i dont wanna be..nothing aggenst rednecks cuz i hang with them everyday)... and its not like to much... its just clean..and these people gave me that.. if i come with ANYQUESTION there is always a respawnce.. even when i put a Laptop question in the 4runner section.. corey didnt yell at me or anything.. just said hey im gonna put it in the pc section cuz it will get better results..(and it was stupid at first to post it in there but i didnt know.) ahh screw it im rambling.. just KEEP THE OT SECTION!! thats where i get my news from/new things i should buy. i bought a flashlight because of this forum.. and that has NOTHING to do with 4runners/toyota at all........

theres always comando, lol.

MNBOY, if you dont want to deal with Off-Topic threads, just take the direct route to the forum section you want. But like stated, if you just press New Threads, just look on the right and it'll tell you what section its in.
