which winch?

i'm planning on fabbing up some new bumpers and sliders for my truck. i've decided i'd like to have a winch but never have had one. i don't really know how much i'd use it or anything else about them for that matter, so i don't want a real expensive one. i also wondered about the mounting holes, are they the same on most winches or do thet vary? any input would be awesome!

I'll be the first to say it...

IMHO, stay away from off brand winches.Warn is #1 out there, followed closely by Ramsey. Milemarker also makes decent winches. Stay away from the Harbor Freight stuff.

A used 8000lb or 9000lb winch should do the job just fine.

You can usually pick these up for under $400. A used WARN is better than a new Harbor Freight winch.

Honestly, unless you have done it before, I would wait till you have winch in hand before you start your bumper and build around it.

I waited till I had mine and only had to build once. Just a suggestion. Unless you know exactly which winch (hahahaha) you will have on the front there.

I picked my used M8000 Warn off ebay for 530.62 shipped from Minnesota to my door.

To reiterate what upndair said" Warn or Ramsey" and you will always be able to get your coin out of either one should you upgrade or sell it

warn warn warn...m8000 is plenty for most toyota applications. You can find sales on them occassionally from various vendors, Desert Rat here in PHX had a sale recently on them...anyways good luck and definitely make sure you design your bumper to fit the winch correctly, or put a reciever style set up front and rear...ive got that...works great.
