VERY COOL!

I like how the tyre carrier mounts backward on your bumper. I think it will look and function nicely on your 4runner.

Heres some pics of my barwork all finished and mounted. I love the style of the way Brook has done the carrier, but not the angle the tyre sits on. So will probbaly be getting another swing out made in the same style, but with the tyre vertical. Am stoked with everything else but!! Awesome workmanship!

So what's other peoples thoughts on the angle of the rear tyre?

Half my mates, and guys on other forums, say leave it, it's something different, others hate it, and say it need to be more vertical....what do you's think I should do?

Heres a photoshop comparision.

How it sits now.

Tyre more vertical.

Originally I was really liking the sloping design. Seemed like better (marginal) tire/ ground clearance as far as departure and it was unique. Even seemed like one could back into a high bank, rock or ledge and get ramped up instead of hung up.

Seeing it mounted on the rig however I think I'd have to go with the straight up design. Unless you can think of something to use the space provided by the angle style. I don't think it would look good, but gas cans, HiLift, other...?

Nice to see fabwork trying to do something original. Maybe it's the forward angle on the back of the 4Runner body that just doesn't make the current setup work for me.

After saying all that... I think the first question is which setup will work the best for your application? Appearance should come second. Function over form always makes sense to me.

To be honest twisty, i like the other look better (dougs carrier) I just am partial to that design, but barring that I think your idea is crazy cool, and very original. but I do think the more vertical would look better, but I have to agree with Elvota on this one, function before form.

Cosmetically, I like the upright, more balanced look.

Functionally, I think more upright would bring polar moment forward toward the center of mass. That would make your truck more stable and able to change direction more quickly without overshoot.

Either way, you must feel the spare mass up so high. Tilted back would only add leverage in a bad way.

If it were me, I'd carry it inside tied to the cargo floor if space is available. This isn't a comment about brooksy's craftsmanship, it's obviously first rate.

When I built the wheel carrier for Twisty I actually invisioned the tyre being more upright but it was difficult to know what angle would be right without his rig. I think it would be best about half the angle that it is at present, but still tilting back. As Twisty is a friend I am happy to make another for him as we have already discussed when he picked it up.

Well I went up to Brooksy on the weekend and picked up the rear bar with some mods done. Spare tyre angle has been straignted up, locking pin has been tigthened up, gas strut added to hold the carrier open, and the whole lot re-powder coated.

Before Pic

How it sits now.

Gas Strut

While I was up at Brooksys we also got the plasma cutter onto the 4runner chassis to make some room for a Aux. fuel tank. Have been speaking to the local engineer and it turns out you can legally cut out the spare tyre cross member (needs to be mod plated) to free up a ˟˟˟˟˟ load of room for a decent aux. tank. Am hoping to squeeze a 80l tank up there now, just got to find the right one.

Heres the pic of the room now available. I've still got to tidy up the cuts with the grinder yet.
(BTW, never get a mild steel mandrel bent exhaust, it'll be as rusty as a ship wreck within a couple years)

Man this is some very nice fabrication work. Super clean truck too. Have to say I've never seen sliders filled but the diamond plate looks awsome!
