So I made a short shifter for the R150 Tacoma transmission. I lengthened the shaft below the fulcrum by around an inch by TIG welding in a piece of solid rod. and then made a spacer for the whole assembly. It works great! The throw is around 4.5 inches, stock was around 7 inches. I haven't cleaned it all up yet because it was more of an experiment at first, but now I know it will work. The best thing is that I have no money in it:

Would it be possible to weld the extra length on the shaft with a wire feed instead of a tig welder? Would it hold up?

 

I'm sure its possible to get it done with a MIG, as long as you put enough heat in it at first and clean it up well. Its just much easier to do it with a TIG in this case because you don't really need to add any material, just melt the two ends together and you can heat separately from adding material with TIG.

 

Im going to have to look into this i have dual cases and both shifters need to move less.

 

im thinking about doing this but dont have a tig my idea is to use a small piece of pipe do you thing that will be strong enough to extend the stick?
