Custom Tire and Jerry Can Carrier Build

I really cant find anyone that sells anything like this, and I figured I would try to piece this together. I stole this off another forum and thought it was awesome.

Anyone got any tips or suggestions on how I could make this better? or does anyone know of anything like this that is sold comercially?

This company sells hitch tire carriers that swing out instead of fold down. They are pretty expensive though.

If you go with the design you posted you probably will want a lock bolt where it mounts to the hitch (instead of a normal hitch pin), that way it wont rock back and forth in the hitch. Something else you can look at for inspiration if you really want to go for a fold down is go to a bicycle shop and take a look at receiver mounted bike racks, which are very similar to what you posted.

Its going to be hard to build something beefy enough to support 100lbs+ with the leverage in that design.

Dang I hate when they dont list the price! Ill have to give them a call in the morning.

The guy that originally made these plans built it in 2008 and has been using it ever since and says he never had any problems. its 1/4'' thick all around so I would think it would be strong enough. The only thing I would change is the bump stop on the bottom, id extend it all the way to the bottom to make it stronger
