I'm still not fond of the 4th gens, but I gotta admit...that looks pretty badass. It looks like it could be a stock item since it blends in with the cladding so nicely.

Well when you upgrade to 37's, I might have to borrow your 315's to see how they do on my truck

Back to work for now. Thanks for all the positive feed back, that makes it worth the long hours..
Jason,
Is the bumper tilted up? It looks like there is more of a gap at the wheels than the front and from the front it looks tilted up slightly...maybe just the photos? It looks "pinched" at the front grill gap.

I really like the design of it- obviously not finished yet- but the bevels and angles on everything make it look pseudo-stealth fighter-military styling.

Dude, you deserve all the praise. That's alot of work. I hope to see it in the flesh but from the photos, it looks like beautiful construction!

It looks good but something about it looks photochopped.
what makes it look like a photochop is the plain big coloring... looks like someone paint-bucketed the sides.

i think it looks pretty good, but agree that the color (cladding color) is a no-go.. get that baby all greened up!

See if I keep pushing you will turn to the darkside.. Actully mine are 35's on 15in wheels so I don't think they will fit. But When I get tires and wheels for the 96 runner they will be 315's

Not sure I understand what your saying but the bumper is tilted back a little It might better be discribed as swooped back. The front of the newer 4runner isn't a flat line it swwop back and up. which makes a flat bumper really hard to do IMO it would look funny.

It's pretty close to the front grill but I left enough room for movement.

I understand.

My girlfriend just saw it and said it looks like an amphibious car!

Thumbs up

This is starting to look really interesting. Lance and Jason, if you haven't already possibly take a look at the Jeep Concept "Rescue". They have some good pictures posted. The winch mounts and recovery hooks look very enticing....
Toyota of Australia has a similar bumper available for their Prado(one version powder coated black), but you just may see the Toyota USA design shop shadowing you...
Waiting to see the end result, how it handles with added weight and what the approximate $$$$ might be.

Lance/Jason,
What is the rear bumper going to look like? Full replacement similar to the front, or just protection like safari guard?

It's going to be as good as the front probably better!

I hope that bumper can pass the 5mph goverment crash test

Pretty sweet, kinda looks like the rigs they have in the ParisDakar Rally can't wait to see the rear has your gas mileage increased looks like you improved the wind resistance, when you bring it into the dealer you should bring a camera, I could not imagine how the techs will react to it but be prepared to hear your warranty is voided

I believe the bumper weighed in around 70#? something like just as heavy as the other bumpers. I told Jason that weight was a key thing for me so he made sure he didn't go too crazy Also the bumper will accomodate a winch too so hopefully when I have enough time, that'll go next.... we'll see

The rear is my biggest concern as I won't have much flexibility on the lift. If the rear gets too heavy it'll be hard for me to raise the back.... We'll have to wait and see how that works out. It looks like it'll be sweet but I won't know until next week. Target date is to get everything powdercoated and done by Wed.

The front probablys weighs in at about 60lbs. I can carry it with one hand. So it isn't too heavy! The winch is going to really put a tax on the front end weight.

The rear I'm working on right now and it will be a tad heavy but will be less mass too it than the current bumper. The one bad thing about the rear of the new runners is the frame is so low that the rear bumper has to be somewhat bulky to cover up the frame and body panels.

Lance, you animal! That has to be the best looking 4th Gen in the U.S. Great job, Jason. Ivan Stewart would be proud.

I'd want to disable all the airbags now. There's no predicting how they'll react with the absence of any bumper crush zones. They could either not deploy or, worse, deploy when you least expect it. My 2¢.

I agree looks great! Aren't airbags nowadays triggered by deceleration rather then bumper impact? Anyone with info on that?

Herman

Hey i bet your MPG is gonna go down because so much air is gonna be getting caught up under your bumper. just an observation.

Not that I know anything about airbags but it doesn't seem to make sense to base it solely on deceleration.
If I stop as fast as I can on the freeway and slam on the brakes - the worst thing that could happen would be an airbag activation.
Or if I'm towing something and suddenly get caught...

I dunno, anyone else have any input?
