Hey, newbe to this site but not to toyota's. Never owned a 4runner but currently looking for a late 80's.Live on the western slope and have found several. looking for tips on what to look for. Have it narrowed to a 22re/5spd with less than 150k on the ticker. solid front axle. any other tips? Thanks for the help.

 

late 80's with a solid axel wont happen, your going to be looking for a 1985 as it was the last year of the solid axel, and at this time they also were going from carb to efi, so if you want the efi (22re) solid axel, 5 spd with less then 150,xxx mi, you have narrowed it down pretty good, but they are out there. You can get an 84 runner with solid axel and 5spd but your going to have a carb'd rig (22r). If you get the carb one you can swap over the efi. I would just do your normal check of the rig when you buy, any oil leaks, rust, how was it upkept, records, I may be weird but i always check the oil in front of the owner of the rig, just to see if it checks out ok. Another thing i like to look for on the yota's is the stock wiring/connection ect under the hood as alot of the trucks have been hack job and jimmi riged up one side and down the other, let us know what you end up with!
