Colorado guys, trip to the hills question

Going on a little 2 day thing with me and my lady to breckinridge CO and I'm deciding if I want to take my truck or not, question is I have never gone in the hills with my beast and I'm wondering how it will do. Its only for a couple days and wondering if it might be more comfy just to take my ladies ride which will be no problem, but I love my truck but for a 2 day trip no wheeling I'm wondering if I will be doing 40 up the hills? I have a 91 22re 456 gears. Anyone take this trip with the same setup? How does your truck do on the hills??

Thanks in advance, disco.

My bad mods if this is in the wrong section it's not much of an event.

Kinda sounds like you don't know your truck very well.

Is it reliable? How does it do on hills? What are the reasons your worried about it?

Start there.

Yea I don't know it well at all, I have had it since October just got the gears and yes it 100 percent as far as mechanically sound. I haven't had a chance to get to the hills yet or go wheeling. Not so much worried about it I just don't feel like being in third gear going 40 and making the trip take hours longer than it would take in my ladies ride.

31's and 4.56 gears. You should have no problem with hills.
Id give it a go. On step grades 4th gear at 3K is pretty quite capable of holding speed.

It's probable that you'll be doing less than the speed limit. My 22re with 4.10s will do around 55-60 on i-70 if not climbing 6% grade.

As for hours longer... Denver to breck is 1.5 hours, think about this a second. Even if you have to spend a little bit of time climbing at 45mph that's gonna add a few minutes to your drive, not hours.

Put this in perspective, I just got finished driving from the springs to flagstaff and back, google maps claimed it would be a 10 hour 45 min drive each way. Including stops I did the drive in 11.5 hours, and I did have a few instances of having to downshift to 3rd to climb hills @ 45. Most definitely not hours longer. Would it have been shorter in a ride with more power? probably, but part of the point of that drive was to just enjoy the ride.

If you love driving your truck as much as you're saying you do, then what's an extra 15-30 minutes enjoying the road with her? (oh and more time with yer lady is always a good thing too)

I drive an '86 22re 4runner with stock 4:10s. I went up to the mountains a handful of time this year in it for skiing. I did have to downshift into 3rd more than a few times in order to pull some of the passes. The worst I'd say is going east before the Eisenhower tunnel. I had to drop it into second a few times to get up that stretch. That being said, mine is older and a bigger vehicle by nature. I say, go for it. In actuality you'll only add about 15 minutes to your drive time, and it's nice to cruise in the right lane and just relax. If you're into speed, I'd say drive something else, because you won't pass many people other than semi trucks. Cheers!

I'm a little late with this but the only thing you are worried about is speed, take the long way round to Breck. That's the nice thing about owning a truck... you don't have to take the interstate. Find / Make your own road up there.
