Smog shop recs
Hi guys,
So my 86 runner 22re didnt pass smog. Running rich and timing was advanced 10TDC (5deg too much). Any recommendations for a smog shop in the Sacramento area?

what part of sac? there are sooooo many smog shops in the area. also, post image of your smog report to better help.
you can do the timing yourself with a $15 timing light from harbor freight, and it's very easy to do. make sure everything else is in good condition and basically just give the rig a tuneup then try again. unfortunately CA smog is so strict that if you have a good running 22re your next option might be to bite the bullet and replace the CAT since it's 27yrs old! i just took my 93 in last friday and it was one point below max HC output/idle...so i may end up having to replace my CAT...

Thanks for the reply, I will try to post the results of the smog. I also found a smog shop not too far from Sac up the 50 that will charge me $230 to fix and run smog. If it doesn't pass or they cant fix it, no charge. Seems like a good deal to me....

%CO2 = 13.3/13.6
%02 = 0.00/0.00
HC (PPM) = 163/151
CO% = 3.67/3.40
NO (PPM) = 29/17
Timing = 10 BTDC
Failed on the functional Fuel Cap.
Prior to this test, I did valves, new 02 sensor, new exhaust manifold, gaskets, etc, new cat, new plugs and wires, checked the MAF for resistance checked out, checked for intake leaks as well...
Old test before I did this stuff was:
0 mph/15mph/25mph
RPM = 0/1516/2443
%CO2 = 7.0/11.3/11.0
%02 = 9.6/2.3/0.5
HC (PPM) = 669/218/196
CO% = 2.75/4.26/6.37
NO (PPM) = 103/193/259
So... I am almost ready to throw in the towel and send it to a mechanic. If you guys have any other suggestions they would be appreciated. Going to try the coolant sensor (to ECU) as well...
If all else fails... any good ones in the Sac area who know the 22re really well?

i can't really help regarding smog, but looks like you've done lots of stuff to try and fix the issue already. too bad, 22re's are generally "sooo simple"
Asked a friend a while back about 22re mechanics in the area since he has an offroad shop and is a big Toyota fan - he says he only deals with Tim at CT Engineering in Rancho Cordova and Cliff at CBC Engineering also in Rancho Cordova because they simply just know Toyotas inside and out as they've been working on them for so long. I spoke to Tim once questioning him about rebuilding my 22re and he spat out tons of info on the 22re rebuild that most shops wouldn't even consider during a rebuild, and i think he's been doing it for like 30+ years. I would call up either one of those guys if it were me.
