Hey now just cuz that one time I picked a blonde um spotter up on the corner does not mean she charged me for spotting. She threw that in for free. JK

Most important tool is your Sliders right next to the winch

1. Locker (rear) Limited Slip (Front)
2. Diff Sliders
3. Rocker panel sliders

That's what I'd do if I could do it all over again...

1. Good tires (without them, you'll go nowhere)
2. Lift (to clear the tires)
3. Locker (you can still go 4x4ing without one)
4. Bumpers/protection (depending on what you do)

i dunno, here is my new list after thinking about it...

1. most aggresive tire you can fit without lift
2.locker
3recovery gear.

i figure if you have a huge lifted locked truck thats stuck...its still stuck...

thats why i put on the list recovery gear!

I'd get a tow strap, shovel, axe, and stuff like that for recovery gear, but as far as I'm concerned, i never go alone so I wouldn't need a winch

no doubt!

that looks like a pretty good list- the recovery gear is an absolute requirement to me

Last year while I was out for a solo put-put on an easy trail, I got bored and decided to play on a large rock- ended up floppin' on the drivers side. I was about 10 miles off the pavement, 30 air miles from home, in a narrow, deep canyon, with about 2 hours of daylight left, and ended up with a seperated left shoulder (no doors, even w/ a lap belt on, my shoulder hit the ground hard!). Well, to make a LONG story short, it took me about 1-1/2 hours to get my gear out, set up, and roll the truck back on it's wheels. All I used to get it done were:

1. a come-a-long, used to pretension the:

2. snatch strap and chains to my :

3. HighLift jack.

It would have been relatively simple if I'd been able to use both arms , but, in the end I got it done, and drove home.

I think everyone has put sliders, tires, and a good head on your shoulders as a choice.
I am 45 and been wheel'n since I was 12, my truck is built the way I think it should be built; and I think everyone has his own idea as to what is important. Build your truck for what you need it for; rocks, sand, mud, hills, etc. I have taken the rocks and hills approach; in the sand my truck is a bit heavy for it, but does very well.

IFS's don't like mud!! Now if I was SAS thats a different story.

Be safe, always wheel with a friend.

You obviously don't have a locker. I consider a locker to be better than 4wd, I spend 95% of the time offroading in 2wd lo with my locker on, you just have to go a little faster and not be such a

1. Toyota 2 or 4wd that runs and is reliable
2. Dog (to walk out with if you don't have a locker yet)
3. Selectable Locker

1. Locker(s)

2. Protection (Sliders, bumpers, skidplates)

3. Tires

Recovery gear should be in everyone's truck anyway.

Build the truck for what you use it for. I can hardly think of a trail truck that does not have those three things.

hey, what do you think of this setup that im gonna run people.... i know its not just the 3 things all together, but heres my plan on doing stuff...hopefully ill get it done within next august 15th, thats what im shooting for....(thats when i got the runner, 1 year earyler)

1. put on my 32's
2.dual tranfers instead of lift
3.locker"s" dont know for the front yet, probably a lsd.

and after i get all that on the truck, the basic stuff like recovery gear will already be bought as i need it throughout the year and on xmas and my b-day...(t minus29 days) i figure if i get all that on, build the front bumper, build the sliders, and build a custom cage thing that i dont want to explain right now, i will have a decent truck, then after a couple years of saving, or 1 more year or somthing, sas it and take it to the next level

what do you all think

do that, or
lift it and lock it?

ps ben. when are you gonna get me pics of your runner...i dont have a digi camera so no pics for me!

Im not that knowledgeable when it comes to the words you guys use sometimes, so what exactly is this locker you keep talking about? I have a 95 runner myself and maybe that could benefit me.

The best explanation I have seen is at; http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm

Read through how a differential works, then look at the sections on limited slip and locking differentials.

If you have any questions after that, bring them on.
