Hey all, I'm fairly new here and have been researching some of the off road modification for going through the lakes and puddles. I wheel an 87 hilux 4x4 and one of my next steps is a snorkel etc. I have a pretty good idea how to rig a snorkel for it, but my current problem (Probably why I need to rebuild my carburetor.) is that my air box is not sealing water tight. There's some play around the top of the carb and the rubber gasket has some tears there and the rubbery part on the top plate of the air box is detached and stretched out. I'm sticking with the carbed setup for now. Wondering if there's any kind of gasket sealer/caulk that can keep the airbox water tight. The last time I took it through a series of huge puddles I got some water down the intake and fouled my plugs and have since needed some starter fluid half the time to start it up. (Carb rebuild is my next step I think.)

Also, I've seen mention of waterproofing the alernator and distributor. Anyone have an explanation on how best to do it? I know to relocate the ECU. Anything else I should do before taking it into deeper waters?

put dialectric grease on all of you electrical connections including stuff like spark plug wires. To water proof a distribuitor take the cap off and run a bead of silicone on the bottom of it and reinstall it, then on the top of the cap should be a little rubber breather vent. take it off and replace it with a rubber hose and run the hose to somewhere that it wont get wet. then your distribuitor will not fail. you might want to upgrade your diff breathers too. you dont want water in those.

 

Put a second frame on top of your original one so you ride above the water line?

And thanks for the tips! Yeah, on the Diff breathers. I was looking at them on Toyotaoffroad.com and plan on taking care of it. Next question is, since I've already driven up to the door bottoms of my truck on several occasions, should I now swap fluid on my differential?

 

If your breathers are in place, I wouldn't worry about it.

If you dont have breathers, then yes change the fluid and get breathers.

 

so if i have breathers(tube running out of my rear axel) i dont have to change fluid in my rear diff?
