bama,
You're right about that...but in my case, I don't use it just for getting me or somebody else unstuck. I use it around my property, and when I do that I use a logging chain with a monster hook on the end, for this purpose you can't go wrong with the receiver shackle. Before I found the receiver shackle I was just using the chain loops on my hitch, but that caused some interesting angles to form, the back end of the Runner would loop around and get in harms way and such...this way I just hook up and pull.
But you are right, for looped tow straps this is a bit overkill.

i actually got the Galvanized Alloy Steel bow shackle from mcmaster's... and it honestly looks used! the orange paint on the pin is all scratched off and worn out.
meh. i dont care, its gonna get that way anyway... i might paint the pin black though.. orange doesnt quite go with my truck

Every single D-Shackle that I have ever owned has had some orange/yellow paint on the pins and it has come off all of them by me just picking it up. LoL.
I'm probably just going to leave mine bare metal...unless I get motivated when I take off my trailer hitch to paint it the same color.
