w56 a or b tech?

w56 a or b tech?
i have an 85 pickup with 22re i know it has the w56a top shift tranny. reverse blew up.
will a w56b tranny from an 86 to 88 drop right in as long as it is a top shift out of a fuel injected rig? splines and length and ratios look to be the same so whats the difference?
also wondering if 2wd trucks of these years with the 22re have the same tranny i could bolt up to the transfer case if i unbolt an output housing or yoke or something? as it would be way easier to find one, and probably a better price.
