Re-gear and locker for 86 t4r
So I know there's a lot of information out there... almost too much! Just wanna see what you guys think about my plan
Truck is an 86 22re 4runner with currently 4.3, 2 pinion 8 inch rear and 7.5 front w/ manual hubs. 31 x 10.5 tires. I want to move onto 33's sooner or later.
I want to get 4.88 and at least a front auto locker. I'm seeing that there are factory v6 4.88 gears available on ebay that should be direct swaps with my truck. Would a smart way to go be to buy these used third members, install lockers into them, then install them in the truck? That way I don't need to re-gear, but just drop in the lockers and install in vehicle? I understand re-gearing is a lot more complex than installing lockers, right?
I don't have experience opening or working diffs, just seen some write-ups. I'm kind of intimidated by clearances and pre-load... but I'm sure I could figure out how to install the locker with some patience. If I go the used factory 4.88 route, at least I'll have minimal down time as the truck is also my DD.
I know these factory 4.88 diffs don't have aftermarket gears available. But is that really an issue? I wouldn't plan on re-gearing again after installing those, and have never heard of the gears themselves breaking.
