question about SAS for rock crawling/mudding

i cant seem to find this specific question in any thread, so ill start this. in a lot of rock crawling magazines my mechanic has, all the trucks have independant suspension all around, and in the magazine it doesnt reccomend sas for any kind of rock crawling, any reason for this? or is the magazine writer full of beans?

Which magazine?

IFS is pretty darn rare in the true world of rock crawling.

not sure ill have to ask my mechanic. he says SA is too unreliable for rock crawling. and according to him the early 4x4 SAS leaked a lot in 4x4. now ive never heard of that, and using IFS for rocking ive never heard of, but then again the guy is like 63. who knows... ill ask him tomorroqw what magazines those were

I would not want my mechanic to think SA is less reliable in the rocks than IFS.

he was never interested in off road stuff, just heavy american muscle cars. he says that SAS is bad in the rocks cuz when one side goes up, the other side goes down and doesnt grip, and IFS does, with lockers. i guess hes got a point, but needs to read up on proper rocking huh? cuz yeah ive never heard of rocking with independant suspension before talking to him about it.

thats WHY people do SAS' because when one wheel goes up the other one is forced down, maintaining contact with the ground... with ifs one goes up there isnt anything pushing the other side down and it wants to go up or stay in the middle... either way you loose traction. i didnt spend 3000 on the front end of my truck to have a truck that is worst in the rocks..... your mechanic is a retard. time to get a new one.

Sounds like your mechanic should stick with American muscle cars. I am sure he has been turning wrenches for many a year and is probably a good mechanic for standard maintenance and repair.

But I wouldn't let him mod your Toyota unless you want a massive blower sticking through your hood and some killer slicks on the rear end when he's done.

He knows cars... not rocks. Although IFS is not terrible off road, it ultimately has it's limits and you'd be hard pressed to find upper end rockcrawlers without straight axles front and rear.

hes been turnin wrenches since the late 50s. i only let him do maintenance on my truck, and thats when its something i cant do myself. i wouldnt mind a blower stickin out the hood if it was a street rod, but for offroad id be gettin a bunch of crap gettin into the intake.

The reason SFA is better over IFS in the rocks (Flame Suit ON people here tend to get their panties in a knot when people diss IFS) is the flex and articulation you can get out of the truck, which allows you to get up and over rocks, logs, etc.

best i ever flexed my IFS out (and really for being stock thats not bad)

best i have gotten since the SAS

although i have to say i was up against a rock on the driver side which kept me from flopping, but i was able to drive outta it just fine WITH open diffs .

another example of a crossed up suspension. the front can flex and keep the body level

no sway bars....

took them off when i was stock for all the flex i could get...

then never built them for the SFA or for the rear lea axle.

and i drive it like a sports car..... it has body roll, thats why shes called Tippsy. but on road handleing is just fine as long as you know what your doing.

yeah i guess he cant be... hes a great mechanic, ask about him at different places in vegas, and most of them will know him and say hes really good. i just dont exactly agree with his offroad theory, since he has never customized nething for offroad(though he builds his own carburators for his 72 honda motorcycle, since parts dont really exist for that bike anymore) and he doesnt seem to be too knowledgable about anything offroad, except for him saying if he had the hummer that came in the other day with the 4500 dollar suspension lift and 20 inch rims and 38 inch mud boggers, hed take it offroad simply cuz it was meant for it. that hummer had never seen the dirt, period. not a scratch on it.
