I personally don't have a winch, but my buddy has a T-Max on a 2003 Taco, mounted to an ARB. And what i have seen him pull with it is pretty nuts. From a full size Dodge, to a jeep, seems to pull hard with no problems. For the price hard to beat in my mind. I have heard the the warn guys have a bit of an ego when it comes to their product. They make good stuff, but the T-Max is just as good for a better price.

I just see different things around here with the nasty florida mud and salt-marsh mud. Makes for interesting winching.

Y'all that are running 8000lb winches (on 4unners anyway) are, almost certainly, running a winch that's too small.

Shhhhh Fred. It is just for the bling factor anyway. No one ever actually USES a winch when wheeling. What are you thinking?

All the more reason for a Tmax... Fully submersible sounds like a good thing in Florida.

What is this about?

There are two Warn winches worth buying, the 8000 and the 9.5 XP or whatever alphabet you want to step up to the 6 hp engine and more no load speed.

M8000.

You forgot the Warn XD9000 like I have had for years, it is a well proven winch.

What is the weight of your vehicle, loaded as it is for the trail ?

Answer this question and we'll continue as to why the 8000lb winches are most likely too small.

You are aware, aren't you, that the 8000lb rating is only for the first layer of rope/wire. BTW, wire, that's another subject all together

I am aware that I have pulled until my 9.5 stalled on the first wrap.

The XD asks for more money without giving more bangs for those bucks.

Oh dearest GodTJ, please tell us what winch we should all be running.

3500 lbs...if that is all your 4runner weighs that is impressive. Have you put it on a scale?

I kinda agree and kinda disagree. I think a GOOD 8000 lb winch (like the M8000) is suitable for a 4Runner. BUT there are going to be many instances where you will need to double line pull. Most people do far too many very highly loaded single line pulls when they should be doing doubles.

It will get quite a bit heavier...no bumpers or exo cage.

Well, since you haven't answered the question neither I nor you will know, correct ?

What does your vehicle weigh as you normally load it for the field ???

Have you even checked the specs on your winch to see what the maximum SAFE load is for each wrap ?

No reason to get all huffy just because you haven't checked into what you should be using for safe operation now is there ?

Why don't you weigh your vehicle and check on the specs on the winch, load for each layer. You should have the manual for that still or check their website.
Post those numbers back up here in this thread why don't you ?

4640 with tools, a spare and me.

Pulls always made with one or two wraps on the drum.

Start the revolution!

I've had no problems single line pulling full size dodges out of the mud with my M8000, also pulled a humvee out of mud...without the use of my snatch block......

the 8k lb winch is plenty for a 2nd gen runner.
