Why dont you just take the light out and look up in there?

on a 00 taco there isnt anything above the light, those screws -assuming you are talking about the tail light mounting screws- just go into plastic holders that are placed into the sheet metal of the bed.

on my 89 if you take the taillight out you can reach all the way up to the bottom of the side rail. i have mine mounted in between the tailgate and side have no issues. just take out taillight and look or feel behind where you want to mount it. be sure you drill small pilot holes to start and then step up to the size you need for your mounting screws.

I won't put the antenna there. The ground plane (Don't know if that's the name in English) will be the trucks roof, so you'll have half of your antenna wasted...

Best place is front bumper (If you've an aftermarket one) or the roof.

I've my antennas on the front bumper.

I mounted mine like you are questioning. There is no right or wrong place to put the screws just hold up the bracket to it and see where you want to put it.

yeah but what about the body?

are those screws bad for it when you drill them in?

becasue like you did it, you just drilled it in to no mans land it looks like

but if you go lower, you can take the taillight off and see the screws come through

but when you mount it about the tailight

where the poop do the screws go?

He has a bracket going in between the tailgate and the body. Dont know how hes got that attached but screws shouldnt be a problem as long as they are strong enough.

I believe I used self tapping screws. Can't remember.

It's been on there for a couple of years now.. the screws did not hit anything, it is dead space above the taillight and it works fine. Many tree limbs have been hit by the antenna.. but that is what the antenna spring is for.

If you are so worried about drilling holes through your 4runner then you can always get a magnetic mount and slap it on your roof.

okay cool

so drilling up there (above the taillight) isn't a big issue?

I would say it's not. Mine is on the left side in the middle of the light, been there for 2 years and never had a problem.
