on a run this weekend, a guy in a 3rd gen snapped an axle up front,, had an extra, and replaced it on site relatively fast.

i am assuming that this can be done with a 2nd gen correct? where can one pick up a spare axle ( or whatever the correct term is)

any write ups available?

 

If you change the axle studs into bolts, you can slip an axle in and out without taking your suspension apart. This can be done by pounding out the studs on the stub axles, and using Grade "8" short bolts with nuts and lock washers.

 

I've did this mod on my truck when I regeared. http://www.off-road.com/toyota/cheaptricks/quickcv/ this is the basic idea. I used my shop press, but you could use the benchvise or possible a c-clamp. The bear is gonna be getting the cv axles out to begin with. You might be able to wiggle the cv's enough to move them out of the way, but I wasn't able to. You can hammer the inner axles out to make it easer to work on. They are just held on by a compression c-ring on the spline end of the axles and can be hammered back into place. It'll probably take a little bit of persuasion with a prybar to get the inner axles out. Once you've done all this it'll be cake to sevice all of it. You can reuse the stock nuts and bolts by grinding off the splines on the bolts.
