Stock for stock the 14bFF is stronger, but a rock anchor. 35 spline 60 is comparable in strength to the stock 14bFF, and will have better clearance under the diff.

full floater 14 bolt has 10.5 ring gear and a pinion support bearing but like joez said they drag on "things",

Dana 60 has i belive a 9.5 ring gear and i also belive the axles are bigger.

up here in the okanagan they snow wheel alot (think those arctic trucks you know 44s diesel slowly over the ice, but here they a 500 hp ,i am not kidding,
foot to floor until you hit a ditch or tree
any way they run both its all preferance 14 bolt is cheaper

Ya, a D60 has a 9.75" ring gear, a 14B has a 10.5".

I know narrowing up a 14B looks to be more expensive than a D60, however a C&C 14B is 63.5" WMS to WMS (DRW) and apparently its easy to covert them... (for ref a IFS rear up to 1996 is 58.5" wms to wms, and a 96+ is 60" wms to wms)

From what I've seen and heard, they (14B) are rock grabbers, but apparently can be easily shaved 2".

Also, 14B shafts are 1.5" in diameter, 30 spline; and D60 30 spline are 1.3". I think that 35 splines are 1.5", but I havent validated that. For kicks, heres a pic of a D60 30spline next to a 14B:

A GM 14 bolt can be shaved 3/4" to 1 ". Shaving it 2" would cause it to have a big oil leak...

A 35 spline Dana 60 shaft is 1.5" diameter, same as the 30 spline 14 bolt.

Overall, the GM full float 14 bolt is stronger. But the 35 spline Dana 60 has more ground clearance and is plenty strong enough for up to 44" tires and big block V8 power.

Did a little digging, you can shave it 1.5" no prob. when you get to 1.75" and beyond you gotta shave the od of the ring gear....

Ref: http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...ble/index.html about 2/3rds down.

I'm thinking it will most likely boil down to whats available and cheap at the time...
