General Tech Woes

I've had the 4runner back for 3 complete days now. Looks like this:

Pulling out of my friends neighborhood tonight around 12:30AM.....KABOOM....skirt skirt skirt......

Just did an auto to manual tranny conversion, ditched the chain tcase and got a gear one which now has 4.7's. (Adapters are expensive) Finally got my 4WD back with the 5:29 gear install up front followed by some new bearings and knuckle rotation for the pinion angle.

The curse lives on.

So how did I get home?

When I heard KABOOM....skirt skirt skirt, I shifted into 2nd and crept off the main road to a side road. When I put the clutch in to shift to 2nd it stopped skirting. Stopped turned it off for a second, pulled out my flashlight to my luck with non working batteries. I hit my friend up and told him I might need a ride home and that I'd call him if I broke down. I thought it overtorqued the pinion and broke a tooth on the ring but he said nah because it would still be grinding in 2nd. I think I just blew 1st gear somehow (crappy tranny or something). I started from 2nd the rest of the way home whenever I had to stop and didnt have any other noises. I don't know what to think...that looks like a hole in my axle...the whole bottom of it is wet with gear oil.

Thoughts anyone?

You think so? I've been real easy on it. Easing it into gear even after I shift. It kind of jumps sometimes but I've been real easy on it.

I hope it's just me, but in your 4th pic it looks like there is a huge crack in the diff. Like around 3 inches long on the left side where the housing shapes outward.
Am I seeing things?

Doesn't make sense that it would be fine in second though. Plus the oil isn't dripping straight from the "crack".

Do you really think my driveshaft angle is the root of this? This is the 2nd time this has happened.

I think everyone was replying to the front driveshaft angle in the pic where you were showing the tranny. If your problem is in the rear and this is the second one you have blown up I would find someone else to setup my gears.

Talking

The FRONT dshaft angle does look steep but that aint got jack to do w/ anything here. :pat:

Sounds like your tranny as why would it only make racket in 1st gear?

Who set up your rear axle gears? Sure it isnt just leaking out the diff gasket?

Sounds like what happened. Its a marlin crawler clutch. I started from 1st several times today on the way to the shop.....

It felt real torqued though.

This is just the locker right here I think.....I will stop. Then start going and it will kick in the rear end. A kick like it turns the axle and the axle drags for a second. This is what that felt like, but REAL loud and REAL hard. That could have hit something against the housing and caused that crack right there along that side? The guy who sets my gears up is really good.
