Do I have a 4cyl diff in my V6 4Runner?

The axle code on the placard for my 88 V6 4Runner indicates it has a 2 pinion diff. The V6 8" is suppose to have 4 pinions. Does this mean it has the 4cyl diff? I've read that some V6 4Runners did come with the 4cyl diff. The code reads as follows: 138JF11G292A340H. G292 is the axle code. G for 8", 29 for 4.1 gears, 2 for two pinion.

I'm wanting to put in a lunchbox locker so I need to know which diff I have. According to the literature for the Detroit EZ Locker there is a 2 pinion V6 diff that was used in 2X4 pickups. It uses the same model EZ Locker as the 4 pinion V6 diff. The 4cyl diff uses a different model.

Anyone have a clue about which diff it is?

Thanks,

SKDAVE

Not all the V6 thirds are 4 pinion. Some are two.

Dave---you have the V6 diff if you have 4 ribs on the outside....if you don't know what I mean then post a snapshot(using the flash) of the diff.

ZUK,

The third does have 4 ribs on each side. So it must be a V6.

Thanks all!!!

the amount of ribs on the outside of the diff case does not determine what its inside pinions/spider gears are..... all you can tell from the outside is if it is a 8" or a 7.5"

I ordered a V6 EZ Locker for it. So I'll find out for sure when I open up the diff to install it. If it turns out to be a 4cyl diff I'll return the EZ Locker and get a 4cyl Aussie Locker.

i dont quite understand this.... there are 4 or 2 pinion setups of side gears for both a v6 and a 4 cyl... i dont see why or how you are saying its a 4cyl if it has a 2 pinion.....

Look here for some good info. My plate says I have the 4cyl diff, but the case matches the 6cyl version. I've yet to crack it open and count the pinions.
