can i replace the cv centering ball myself?

the centering ball is shot in my rear shaft.i used a ifs cv on it when i did my chevy spring conversion a while back.i just welded in a cv end from a front shaft onto my old rear shaft.it gave me the extra length i needed too.i have several other ifs shafts that are already apart with good components.can i remove the centering ball assembly from the end that is welded onto the shaft myself?is it damaged by removing it?can i get one out of a doner shaft without screwing it up enough to put in my rear shaft?there seems to be a seal on top of it too.i guess that ill have to get a new one of these too.is this strictly a dealer item?
ive seen writeups on the disassembly but never anything on the replacement of the ball.
thanks
