Bolt-On or Weld-On D-Rings

my 03 4runner has no front end recovery points to speak of, so I got a pair of 11,000 lb bolt on D-rings. what grade of bolts are best?
some have told me that a grade 5 will shear and that grade 8 will give more because they arent as hard. should i have them welded as well ?

Don't know what size bolts they are but I would go with grade 8. If they were designed to bolt on then I assume that if you use a grade 8 bolt in the correct size you should not have a problem.

Go at least grade 8 if your using bolts. A better question might be, where/what are you going to fastening/welding them too? The only thing worse that a broken cable or tow strap coming at you is having the hook or D-ring joining it in flight.

bolt-on D-rings

no they didnt come with bolts, I'm going to drill the frame just behind and above the factory hold-downs. I may have those things cut off, they're useles. thanks for the hardware advice. once I get them on, do you think a quick tackweld or 2 wil help, or am I just wasting my time?

One thing about the hardware. Should you chose to stay with metric, it doesn't go by grade, it goes by class. In that case you would want class 12.9 which is a bit better than standard grade 8. If you picked up a class 8 scew, it would be the equivalent of a grade 5 and not very strong.

As elripster said. Use at least grade 8 or metric 10.9, if you can get your hands on them metric 12.9 about as strong as you can go in the civilian world. Just make sure they are bolted to something very strong [like the frame].
