Aussie Locker Install

Hey, I just got my aussie locker in the mail. I'm reading through the directions (plus a bunch of directions on the 'net) and I'm trying to figure out what gaskets/seals/shims/washers I should go buy before I tear it apart. Also should I try to reset my pinion and or backlash?

You won't need anything but some black RTV and some brake cleaner. ZUK has some great writeups on installing Aussies on his homepage.

Also if you read where they say use greese to hold the parts together DON'T just work them in with out it. I did mine to the letter and had to pull it apart twice because the greese would not let the locker freewheel and it stay's locked without any give.

What volcom said. check out Gearinstalls.com. You will have to remove the ring gear from the differential in order to get the aussie in where it needs to go and the backlash will need to be checked when you first pull the third member out in order to use the same measuement when reinstalling it. Very specific tools are needed. check gearinstalls.com, ZUK knows what he does, and i used the info there to re-gear my setup.

lal357- I would like to get an aussie for my truck. How well does it work in the front axle(steering)? They have alot of hype on their site, but not many reviews online. I want one for the rear of my 82 but worry about handling on icy roads. Thinking front instead but worried about blowing the birfields.

I love mine in my front IFS. I haven't had any steering issues. As long as I am not giving lots of throttle, seems to unlock when needed.

So, doing research on which locker to get... seems like the Aussie is a no brainer. I read the Aussie lockers website about how it works and read around to see what real world users say about it.

Is there anyone on here that has a good reason to get a different one? Or anyone that would punch me if I get another one? I love the simplicity of this system. What I need it for is straight forward, for the rear end to lock up when the balance of the weight is only on one side. I don't want to have a left rear tire spinning in the air and not allowing me to make it up that obstacle.

I posted good pics when i installed my detroit ez in the front on my build thread. I didnt have to check any backlash or any of that BS. As long as you keep your shims where theyre suppost to go and dont mess with the pinion gear it should be pretty doable..

keep a count of how many times you turn each carrier bearing, also make sure you keep track of them left to right..
my third member has survived my aussie install for about 4 years for so.
I have one up front, works great but if I ever get the cash i will install a selectable up front since my truck has become a semi regular DD and having a fully locked front end on the road kind of sucks if you need 4x4 during the winter..
