8" V6 3rd from 93-95 the same as 96+?

I've been scouring the Pittsburgh area for a 8" V6 3rd with the hole in the housing for the ABS sensor. This is in preparation for a regear/ARB install. I already scored a front diff, so this is the home stretch.

Are the 96+ 8" V6 3rds the same as the 93-95?

If they are different, can the later model units be used (with no leaking/modifications)

Is the hole in the housing (for the ABS sensor) the same from the 2nd Gen to 3rd Gen 8" V6 3rds?

I have factory 4.88's AND can't afford the downtime, hence the search. Thanks all.

Do 96+ come with rear only ABS? If they have 4 wheel abs then they shouldn't have a hole in the diff for the ABS, the sensors should be at each wheel.

Should be 4 wheel ABS, or at least my bro's 97 is.

If Steve is right on the resultant sensor location, you could be SOL Mike.

Barring that exception, if it is the case, it would be the only functional difference. Other than that, 89-02 Runner rears ought to be V-6 and the same.

96 third

Hey,

I put a Tru-Trac in my rear end about a year or so ago and it doesn't have a hole for the ABS. The 4Runner is 4 wheel ABS and the sensors are at the axle tube ends. You will have to find another rear only ABS third to put in your truck. The gears and some other internal parts are the same, but the third member has other changes (the hole, ABS ring, etc.). So, keep looking and good luck.

Brian

Mike,
Check this auction . I think he's got what you're looking for. Good luck.

Thank's George.

Unfortunately, that's exactly the one I don't want though (I wasn't clear). The factory 4.88's have a goofy carrier that either can't be made to work with an ARB, or there is a bunch of monkeying around required.

I'm regearing to 5.29's and need to find a 93-95 housing out of a V6 with 5 speed with rear ABS. I think these are either 4.30 or 4.56 - doesn't matter since I'm having the gears pulled out, but those have the "right" carrier for ARB's and regearing with aftermarket gears.

Well if you're putting an ARB in it you'll be replacing that stupid offset carrier... are you sure it won't work?

Am I sure? Um, well, no. I seem to have a stroke everytime I think about this and can never keep it straight. I want to keep my rear ABS, use a V6 3rd, add an ARB and 5.29's. Beyond that, I don't know anything for sure...

I'm sure glad Marlin is a couple hours away from me.

Mike, why not just order the whole 3rd member/ARB from Marlin or somebody?

I have a V6 third with the ABS hole in the top. It has 4.56 gears, and a TrueTrac.

Unfortunately it is not for sale because it is on my truck. It was very hard to find and wasn't cheap.

Cause I'm too damn cheap.

Actually, it may come to that if I can't locate the right third by next week. I know a place that likely has one, it's just a pain to get out there...

Sounds like time to go complete. Cost becomes close to a wash for parts and install unless you have some really great friends.

How much did you pay for the 4.56 gears, ABS and TrueTrac? When I swapped, I sold mine to someone who ended up plugging the ABS hole since he did not need it. I let it go for $450 IIRC.

Avoid the stroke, call ARB and ask the guys who know what will work! (206) 264 1669

It seems to me that the 3rd with 4.88s is fine for you. You'll be replacing the carrier and gears. I have no practical experience with this though.
