yes its possible... unless you find a whole third with it already installed its not going to be cheap as it will need to be setup properly.... itsn ot going to be cheap even if you find a complete one, you will need the wiring for it..... i would look on ebay to be honset.... do a search here... tons of info o nthe swap... also check out www.4x4wire.com for an install they did on one...

I ended up selling my lockerless '97 for a '99 with a locker plus I really wanted a Sport Edition anyway so I waited til a '99 came my way. If you off road them a locker is really nice to have and you will use it when the trails get rough or steep.

If you want to see what is involved in retrofitting an e-locked third see Phong's write-up here. There is nothing easy or "bolt-on" about it.

Unless you switch out the entire axle. Also remember that most of the e-locked thirds were 4:30 gearing and the non-locked 4Runners were either 3.90 gearing (15"wheel package) or 4:10 gearing (16"wheel package), so unless you have 4:10 and can find a 4:10 e-locked third, you are going to have to re-gear. I found my e-locked third at a junk yard for $350. Plan on wiring and new studs for the retrofit to run you around another $100 or so. Also do a search, this topic has been covered numerous time.
