Got a trip planned to go snowmobiling this weekend across the bridge in St. Ignace, MI. It's about a 500+ mile drive each way. My buddy was gonna drive and take his Suburban...but his wife wrecked it today and it won't be fixed in time.....so.....the only other potential tow vehicle is my 01 Sequoia 4x4.

Should I be concerned about towing a 3000 pound trailer for 1000 miles. It's a dual axle trailer and I don't have a brake controller.....and there's no way to get it installed before we go due to logistics. My Sequoia has 134,000 miles. It's been flawless since I bought it a year ago with 99K...but I have lately noticed that it shifts slow... it stays in gear a little longer than it should when it's first driven in the cold......I have replaced all fluids in the axles, tranny and transfer case with Amsoil Sythentic and run Valvoline Maxlife 5w30 in the engine.

So..... Should I do it? Or am I gonna kill it?

Absolutely not gonna kill it. The Sequoia is the best tow vehicle I have been in. Buddy of mine regularly tows a 6500# trailer. Dual axle, 18' x 8'. Though he does have brakes and a sway bar/equalizer bar. He towed a 3000# u-haul trailer a total of 4500 miles in August, at 75 - 80. He has 90k and uses Amsoil. I would get a trans flush, but thats about it. It takes 30 minutes to install a brake controller in the Sequoia. Why don't you have time?

 

I can't get a brake controller installed cuz I'm out of town till 9:00pm Friday nite and we are leaving Sat morning. I also only have a flat 4 pin connection so I would also have to rewire to a 7 way.

Thas wierd. My buddies came stock with a 7 pin

 

They have adapters you can buy. Plug the one end in the 4-pin and plug the 7 pin in the other. Or just re-wire it when you get home, shouldn't take you more than 20 min.
Oh yeah, and wouldn't hesitate to take it. You'll be fine.
The late shifting problably has more to do with the engine reaching optimal operating temperature than it does with the trans and motor.

 

since when is 134k "high mileage"? what are you, a jeep guy or something? seriously!

edit: why don't you pick up a controller on yer lunch break and just wire it yourself that evening?

 

Also, tow in OD off. 3,400 RPM is normal. Right in that sweet spot.

I have a mommy van 2006 4Runner and I have a 3500lb camper. Sometime I forget to bring the brake controller (not a permanent install) and the vehicle stops everyting just fine.
