PTO winch help

Years ago I bought a factory original pto and istalled it on a 1978 fj40. The winch pays out in the four forward speeds and retracts in reverse??!

The cable comes off the top of the drum: if I have it coming off the bottom the angle bar on the winch mount is in the way before the roller delects the cable. All the pictures and schemantics show the cable off the top?

Shouldn't it be retacted in the the four forward gears and pay out in reverse? I have racked my brain to figure out how to revese the pay out and retreive gears.

Thanks Bob

The PTOs i had you winched in foward and reeled out in reverse. So you should be right. Foward =winching......Reverse=letting out(pay out)
