Fzj-80

Drove by a nice looking rig, a 91 FZJ-80 Landcruiser (not sure what the Z stands for) for sale $3400 or BO. 199986 mi, loaded, 4.0, clean inside and out. Anyone have any input on one, good or bad ? My son's looking for a family sized vehical in a 4x4 and wants my 4Runner (ain't gonna happen) but this one looks good and is in his price range. Mileage is high but then again it's a yota.

It's a FJ80 (91-92), not an FZJ80 (93-97)... The "Z" indicates it has the 1FZ-FE 4.5 engine 215hp, vs the 3FE 155hp engine in 91-92 80 series cruisers. FZJ's also have4 heel disc brakes, 4 wheel ABS, full floater rear axle, and other upgrades. I liked the FZJ alot more than the FJ, but at $3400 it could be a good deal.

The major maintenance usually neglected is the birfields (CV) need repacking with grease between 90-120k miles, ~$1000 at the dealer or ~2 days of tedious but uncomplicated labor in your garage and ~$300 in parts. This service is frequently overlooked, and if there is clicking when turning at full lock, you will need new outer axles as well (more $$). Other than that any 80 series should last 300k plus with routine maintenance. The 3FE engine is bomproof and the trannys are stout as well.
