Considering a 98-99 LC...
Basically, I have a 97 4Runner V6 right now but want more power and space. I've always loved the cruisers, and am contemplating a 98ish (no earlier since I want the V8) FZJ80. Are there any real problems with these years? I heard that the tranny can make a noise when shifting from neutral to drive or something like that, but an additional ball in a check valve will fix that... A couple other things like that I consider to be minor, since they are easily fixed annoyances that don't affect the mechanical integrity.
I assume they're just as bulletproof as the rest of the LC lineup but figure it can't hurt to ask the crowd on it...
Now I just gotta find the money... *sigh*

I've owned both years of those FJ100's. Incredible machines, no problems I'm aware of. The tranny fix is covered by a TSB. Almost all have been updated by now. Those are the last two years with an optional mechanical locking RR diff, the most desirable config in my book. Resale collapsed on those this Summer with gas >$2/gal. You can find a low mileage rig in the $17K range now. Be sure the timing belt was replaced @60K and you're good to go.
