Nitro Gear at King of the Hammers
If you are heading to Johnson Valley this February, come stop by the Nitro Gear booth during the King of the Hammers race week. We will be in booth 76 with our axle experts who can show you our new products and also help you decide what upgrades are right for your axles. We dropped by the Nitro Sponsored team of Jordan Townsend late last night here at King of the Hammers 2016 and found the crew busy going over the car after a long day of pre running. Lots of organization and commitment for this team as they intend to make a good showing in this years race.

#KOH2016 has continued our lessons in humility.
We started the morning with strategies to utilize our great starting position and knowledge earned from previous KOH races. We hit the desert smooth and precise racing the terrain and limited sight distance in the vast dust. Into the first lap we felt the drivetrain groaning for attention. We soon had front wheel drive only and could not climb up the sandy hills to main pit. We quickly diagnosed a stripped rear driveshaft slip yolk and swapped the driveline using the spare on the car. With grease covered hands, it was smooth sailing to main pit where the NASCAR level crew topped off fuel and checked the remainder of the car.
We made quick work of the first few rock trails and soared through Chocolate Thunder picking smooth lines, however we noticed something still wasn't quite right.
The middle of Jack North had an obstacle that resembled a thousand upright candy corn type boulders that the car would not climb. We realized the front differential would not lock and tried smarter lines with the same outcome. We got out of the car to better access the challenge to see a Freddy Krueger size slice in the rear tire. With spare tire and Jack in hand, they were useless as we are now part of the obstacle and continue to spot the next 20 cars around, near and over our car. With a break in traffic, we drove, drug and beat the three wheeled beast to flat ground for the tire repair.
Once over the hill we started down Jackhammer. As KOH promised, there was a car upside down in the only good line. The second option was a multi story waterfall, the same very one that sent the #5 Campbell car to the shop earlier in the week as Shannon tried to jump the cow over the moon.
Out of energy from the previous challenges and just beginning to get our bearings again we drove around the wheels up car and headed down the ledge. It was risk but a calculated one, but we all know you can fix any poor downhill decision with the throttle. We drop the cliff, and as soon as we are ready to mash our motor the car stopped. Like a mouse hung over a snakes cage, we were dangling from the rear axle. Unable the move, the Bomber chassis behind us gave a nudge. It was the perfect storm. As we were being mounted, his tire drove over ours and was wedged between our rear tire and rear shocks. Simultaneously his front bumper was woven into our tire carrier. We were stuck together like two dogs in the front yard, only we needed more than a hose to get these apart.
As we struggled to separate the two "Randy" cars while being heckled by the 3000 some spectators, I thought to myself, is this the type of penetration required to make a baby Armada car?
After exhausting multiple options, we decided to unbolt the loaded bumper from the front of the Bomber. Certainly I would suffer from blunt force trauma, using the spare tire ratchet strap as a Jaws of Life, the cars were freed.
Just as I take an exhausting breath of relief, wile backing off, the rear car pushed ours off the cliff, barrel rolling it into a crevasse. It completed a full roll and nearly went for a second. The shocks cushioned impact stabilized the car. I'm not sure this was what we had in mind tuning them earlier in the week.
The crowd went wild as my stomach sank to my feet. When will this circus end?
It landed full on Austin Powers, sideways, again dangling ten plus feet from the bottom. We used the winch to stabilize the car and pull up hill. Belly hung, we removed the safety line and tried to back out. Nope! Full wheel stand and ready to tumble some more. We reattached the life line and repelled backwards down the incline. Finally, no where else to fall.
We gathered our minds, then gathered our stuff. A spectator attempted to walk away with the hydraulic jack as a souvenir as a course worker intervened. We hit the race course again, without the traction of a locking differential needed to complete the challenge. We were depleted of our energy, depleted of our motivation, and depleted of our time to complete this adventure.
Sadly, we called it. KOH won.
