Hello all,
Not sure if this is the correct place or not, please move if need be. I keep hearing bad things about the early 5 lug dually axle, I believe were recalled, not worth rebuilding, etc.... What made them so bad exactly, that caused them to be replaced by the 6 lug version? I looked around, though I couldn't find the answer, my google fu is quite lacking. I can find a 5 lug locally, and am just trying to figure out what made them so bad/weak. Thanks all.

The way I understand it, those early dually rvs were intended to be single wheel rear ends. They were "converted" to dually by using wheels that simply bolted a second rim onto the first while only the first was attached to the hub. This, along with overloaded capacity and the lugs started to shear as well as bearing failing. This resulted in wheels coming completely off at speed. That ain't good. Throw the word "rv" into your google search. Like "toyota dually rv 5 lug" and you'll see lots of info on the subject.

OK thank you for the simple explanation on it. Makes more sense to me now.
