On that note...If I had to have ONE gun and One gun only it would be a .22. And probably a pump one so there is no technology to jam up or break (or well…less than an auto loader.). Perhaps a Winchester 1890 or a Taurus 72. And here is why. If ur looking for a survival rifle, .22 is the way to go. Ammo is prolific, affordable and large amounts of if can be carried (kind of why the US went to the .223). And if u shoot it well u can kill deer and hogs to coon or squirrel. I say .22 but my opinion and .50C will get u a cup of coffee, just not at Starbucks.

For a noob? Carry? Get yourself a revolver. 38 or 357, double action.
Other folks hit on the head with 1911's cocked n locked, kinda sucky for noob carry.

If you want an auto so you can have big mags, that is still double action, check out the CZ 75 in .40cal. (i've got a cz40 that I really like, but they're no longer made).

The best part is, for 1000 bucks, you can get the cz and the revolver.

For a BEAUTIFUL gun, sure, check out the Kimber, wilson, baer, para...but that seems like maybe not the best choice for you since you're not quite sure what you want.

Nice piece. I personally prefer 1911's but I had a chance to shoot a Sig P220 combat with a silencer on it and it was the best shooting gun I've ever had the pleasure of handling. The HK's are definitely very nice as well.

Lots of good posts/guns! But I'm gonna have to bring it down to reliability and usefulness.
870 Express Mag. That gun can take you far in a survival situation and will last forever.
Just my two cents.

Decided to build my dream gun and make it a reality
AR-15 chambered in 5.56 for CO long-range prairie dog control
Vertical grip allows me to shoot from a standing position on 4x power, as opposed to prone only

Sorry for the bad picture quality

When the SHTF, it'll be an M-14 with AP rounds

noble thats a sick ar nice work man...My carry is a kimber custom II 45acp...I am very happy with it but as a carry it's a little big to pack around so I don't pack it much...mostly when i'm hunting because I hunt with a bow and the wolves have gotten bad here I had a sig 9mm for awhile but it wasn't the most comfortable gun to handle the kimber with a hogg grip is perfect

im biased toward the browning hi power 9mm, i shoot one of these for target and longer range stuff, i concealed carry an xd9mm s.c. and it is only accurate across a room but the browning will allow a close grouping at 50 feet easy

Guess I'm just old fashioned. For camping I carry a model 686 S&W .357. With hot-loaded 3/4 jkt HP it will stop just about anything. And if you can't dissuade a predator animal with six rounds of that, you're toast anyway. For protection an EAA Witness .40cal w/ 1/2 jct HP does the job. A bit heavy but accurate and deadly. For light-carry, a Colt Mustang II .380. Like the fellow said, with 2 center of mass, and 1 head shot... even a .380 will do. Any one of these is far less than 1K bucks. For just one, I'd go with the Smitty.

For 20 years I carried a Ruger Blackhawk .41 mag (yes the single action six gun) and would still be if some crack head hadn't broken into my house and stolen it. Man I loved that gun.

Anyway I recently bought the XDM in .40, compact version. It's smaller than the full size and larger than the sub and fits my hand really well. Light weight, easy to shoot. The only thing that might turn some folks off is that it's hammerless and once it's "hot" it stays that way until you drop the mag and remove the round in the tube. It also has the blind indicators for round in the chamber and firing pin ready so you can run your hand over it and in less than a second know if it's ready to fire even when you can't see.

For 700$ it came with the safety lock, 2 mags, 3 grips to make it feel the way you want and the pelican hard case. I carry it almost everywhere.

I own more guns than any one man should.

That said my fav handgun has always been a quality 1911.

For some reason I woke up and had a wild hair to buy a 'plastic' gun. Mostly to stick in the rack bag on my ATV and drop in my glove box carefree.

My first thought was Glock (aka, block cause thats what it feels like in the hand) but my gun dealer and fellow competition shooter refused to sale me one. He knew my history with the 1911 and knew I could never shoot a steep handled, typical for european style design, handguns.

He proved this to me with a simple test. Standing in his shop he handed me a 1911. At low ready, I looked at a light switch about 12 yards away in the shop. I closed my eyes and brought the 1911 up, opened my eyes and I was on the money. I then tired the same test with a Block and when I opened my eyes I would have shot the ceiling with in 12 yards, thats how far off my natural aim was off.

I postponed my purchase for several years. During that time I ran across an extensive test article completed by the FBI where several new calibers were tested. I fell in love with the .357Sig.

Wasnt long and I found my gun. I purchased a S&W M&P 4" with Trijicon sights chambered in .357 Sig.....It has quickly become my #1 go to gun. I love shooting it, its incredibly accurate, CHEAP to load and has a sick effect on phone books, much more devastating than my .45 ACP, .40S&W.

i have a ruger kp345 .45ACP went thru police training with it had less ftf's and fte's than glocks hks and sigs and tied for 4th in range but go with what feels good in your hand. side note i hit a frying pan at 100 yards with the ruger 5 out of 8. with a glock 0 out of 10 but people swear by them. but thats my opinion its worth what it cost.

I absolutly despise Glock. They have way too many accidental discharges cause of that trigger safety BS. I would rather carry someting that ya know is gonna work everytime. I would prefer a 1911 but I jus aint got the cash. This is what I got for a sidearm
