Unhappy yota started smoking on and off while offroading

this afternoon as i was coming off a trail down this mountain i noticed a little bit of white smoke coming from the tail pipe. so pull over and stop the truck...let it idle observing the smoke then switched it off and checked the fluids and so forth...everything seemed fine...was running fine before i switched it off...so i let it sit there cooling off because it felt very warm under the hood from the lack of airflow creeping up and down the mountain...i fire it back up and no smoke then proceed on up this other trail and the smoking kept coming and going pretty much...it finally got dark on us but after we hit the highway i pulled over a few miles down...got out with my flashlight and couldn't see any smoke...nor did i see any when i got back home...i'll have to look again with sunlight tomorrow...does this make any sense to anyone? has anyone on here had similar happen to them? i was at some pretty steep angles would that have anything to do with it? thanks oh yea almost forgot...it's a 91 22re auto

any idea of why it would leak coolant only every now and then...and sometimes more than others? (if leaking coolant is the problem)

Is the smoke white? Or does it have a bluish cast? Blue is oil. If it's white, the problem could be in your headgasket.

Did you suck any water in while wheeling ? My Runner took a good drink this weekend and blue smoke for awhile. Fine now..

Ahh Crap that reminds me I gotta go clean the K&N Filter and RE-Oil it...

nah i went through very little water...the streams weren't deep at all and only a few small puddles...mostly just some rocks...could something have been getting too hot from creeping around in 4 low? i wasn't reving up much at all but there wasn't much airflow either...drove it some yesterday and everything checked out ok...
