That's the reason I went with tubes that angle at around 45 degrees in my ghetto paint drawing.
The closer you get to 90 degrees the easier it will be for the load to dislodge the winch with a side load. If you stick with a trapezoidal design you should be fine and would require much less gusseting. But I dunno how much more width you have on the truck to allow that kind of angles coming off the front of the winch.
It comes down to the amount of space you have behind/under the bumper and how wide the frame rails are compared to the winch.

Again, like you said Nic, without actually seeing where this would have to be mounted, I don't know if there would be enough room for gussets like that.

but now i'm thinking, rather than gusset it there, just make those plates like "triangle flag" shapes. cut that plate the shape to include your gusset all in one piece.

Of course I wonder how it would look with the fairlead poking just outside the chrome bumper (Ill cut a whole for it)

oh man! now that guy has the set up, but that's a lot more work there, he's got full front end protection, not just a winch mount.

thats what I am talking about. I took my bumper off last night and it looks like I might have to trim a cross member a little but other than that it looks easy.
Ill be interested to see his build up (if he comes over or we find it)

You could mount the winch somewhere under the truck towards the rear and guide the cable with rollers. With the HEMTT, the winch is mounted behind the cab on the passenger side and there are rollers all along the side so you can run the cable to the front or the rear, depending on what you need.

I thought about that as well, but there are more problems with that design. It would cost more money, harder to rought, more to go wrong, also it would be hard to real the winch line back up on the spool properly. But I understand what your saying. That would be nice though to run it to the front or rear with one winch depending on what I need...

And comparatively, how often do you really need to winch from the back end anyway? I'm sure there are situations, but probably not enough to warrant all the work involved...
...Still, it would be nice to have the option, I suppose.

so last night I did it. It took me about 2 good solid hours. Of course I had a plasma cutter and a $6,000 welder and as many tools as I needed and another thousand tools that I didn't need. haha.
So on to the tech. It was ALOT easier than I anticipated
Basically all I did was make a plate to go on top of the frame. I had to cut the support right in front of my condensor/radiator and the support that holds the grill in the center. I then cut a 1/4" flat stock 31.5" X 6". I then grinded the front frame flat. Cut a slit in it for the line (something for the AC). Then I put it on and welded it. We took the plasma and cut some angles in it. Look at the pics (when I get them up). Before I burned the plate on, I drilled the wholes for the winch with a drill press. And that is about all I did for the winch mount plate. I still have to make a plate for the fairlead
For the bumper, I had to cut out some of the valnce peice were the licsense plate goes but that is ALL.
