Like the others said... Because you have a JEEP. Go and test drive a new V8 4Runner and then drive your Jeep along the same route, and then the answer should be clear (I can almost guarantee you that you'll choose the 4Runner).

And also look at it this way, if you get the 4Runner it will last pretty much forever if you treat it right. I'd like to see a Jeep last longer than 200,000 miles and still run as well as it did at 100,000 (or even 50,000) My '91 4Runner runs absolutely great, it's 11 years old and has almost 170,000 miles on it and I have no doubt that it runs just as well as it did the day it came home from the dealer.

I've driven a Jeep (it was a '94 Wrangler, but I've also driven my Uncle's '98 Cherokee) and I would NEVER go back to a Jeep from a 4Runner (well Xterra now Because I just bought a new Xterra)

I'm not meaning to knock your Jeep and I like their 4WD system, but I personally think the 4Runner's engineering and reliability is better. If both the 4Runner & the Grand Cherokee were made by Toyota I would have bought the Cherokee. My '97 4Runner lacks features the '97 Cherokee equivalent came with (3 of which broke on my Cherokee test drive, by the way). With the 2003's being so feature-filled, it mostly comes down to Jeep vs. Toyota, not the Grand Cherokee vs. the 4Runner.

When I first purchased my 4Runner, I was going to get a Grand Cherokee instead. I liked them both and simply decided on Toyota over Jeep, which made my purchase decision.

It's personal preference though, I think. If you like your Jeep, then you have no reason for wanting the V8 4Runner no matter how much we try to persuay you.

 

I would never use subliminal messages or anything (...get the 'Runner). I'm sure you're happy getting your 'eep fixed every few months (...get the 'Runner). No worries! We like 'eeps. Hell, we'll even pull 'em out of the muck (...get the 'Runner).

Compare the resale value between a jeep and TOYOTA. I just traded a 2002 fullsize Quad Cab Dodge and ate a bunch of money on the trade just to get back into the Toyota.

 

Can't argue with that. I just saw a 2000 Durango, brand new probably sold at $37k USD, now selling for $17k USD.

 

Kinda of off topic, but I got my '00 Jeep Cherokee Sport to use back at work. Within a few days however, my check engine light came on though and turns out #4 spark plug wire shorted out.

You guys should really drive these vehicles, they really aren't that bad. Light offroading isn't really that bad with it either. I just wish they would last instead of breaking down so much as everyone reports.

 

I know a lot of drivers of old Jeeps but none of them have the original motor, transmition and axles. In all of them something has had to be replaced and in many cases the only original part seems to be the steering wheel. My 200,000 mile Toyota has all original parts except for the differentials which I changed to get a better gear ratio and a rear locker. Just about everything else has been along for all 200,000 miles. My original motor passed emmitions testing with 4% of allowable CO and 17% of allowable HC. I could probably remove the Cat. converter and one spark plug wire and still pass the test after those very enjoyable 200,000 miles. No original Jeep motor could do that no matter how well you take care of it. I still get 22 miles per gallon. Toyota motors are more reliable and durable than any other motors period.

 

When my '90 truck got totaled October of '98, I rented a '99 Jeep Cherokee courtesy of Farmer's Insurance.

I drove it for about a week and I really liked it.
Of course it had all the power windows and mirrors like my 4Runner has now, but the Jeep drove OK.

I was even looking at that type of rig to get, but I am glad I stayed with Toyota.
I talked with quite a few owners of the Cherokee's, and they all said they had to many problems with them.
When I got the insurance money and went looking for a rig, the 4Runner was just begging me to buy it.
Reminded me very much of my truck that had just got murdered.

 

Amen to that Matt! My first Toyota experience was the truck my best friend got handed down in High School. It was an 89Xtra Cab and we went places and did things in that truck that no truck should have to endure. (Most of it while on the backroads.) Yes I am a hick and the trail started in my backyard..LOL Anyways he finally traded it in for a Taco with 280K and it was still going strong. From then on I am true Toyota believer!

 

I guess we are all a little biased. Here is a new rating from Edmunds.com on a follow-up evaluation they did for Jeep Cherokees. It doesn't sound good to me.
