Is it possible to find a 96'ish 4x4 v6 for sale in the 8000-8500 range? also, where would be a good place to search?

You will find plenty in this price range, be very picky and get something you will be happy with. Try to find one with a locker.

The 3.0 (3.slow) only applies to 89-95 4runners and Pickups before 95.5 (not Tacoma) The newer V6 is the 3.4 which is more powerful and more reliable. If you are getting a Tacoma the 2.7 4cyl would be fine if you're not hauling anything (ass included). A 4Runner though would be pretty gutlass with the 4cyl.
