I was thinking of picking this up along with the poly sway bar bushings. The 2 previous owners of the 4runner never took it off road. I try to hit the trails twice a week so I was going to get it as a precaution but I'm wondering if it is nessasary or worth it. It is pretty cheap but I just thought I would ask.

A couple of the COTTORA guys have done it. Apparently, it's a PITA, but once it's installed seems pretty nice.

 

which part, the steering rack or the sway bar bush? and who are the COTTORA guys?

Ya, one guy in there mentioned the Wheeler's kit. I am just not sure if it is something I NEED.

What I NEED to do is save up for new tires.

 

How many miles on your 4runner?
Do you currently have any "play" or abrupt/abnormal shifting in your steering?

 

I replaced my rack and swaybar bushings at 130k and it did help tighten things up.

 

Yes it is a PITA to do but the PE bushings do make the steering tighter. Unless you have excessive abuse to your rig or off-road all the time no need to replace these under 100k IMO.

Did one last wekend on a 98 4Runner.

 

I have a 96 that just rolled 211k. A lot of the miles were racked up on trips back and forth from NW Florida to Tennassee.

its in great shape for the amount of miles and the steering is tight, no slopp. The farther, son previous owners never went off road, but I hit the trails about twice a week. Plus I am moving to England and I plan on wheeling there just the same. So like I said, it would just be a precuationary effort, but I might just hold off for a bit.

I would do it, I think it would be worth your time. Mine is a 96 with but 69k on it (got it with 57) and I did the steering rack bushings - steering tightened up considerably! Especially so on highway speeds, where it used to feel somewhat sloppy.

 

This is exactly the reason that I ordered a set, glad to hear you've had good results! I will be putting mine on next weekend.

 

I think you guys just helped me make up my mind.

 

I bought mine at least a year ago and the box has been sitting under my seat since then. Really need to get them put on...

 

i tried ordering from wheelers but they are out of stock and wont have any for a couple weeks. reason they gave was because of a design change. so if you need the parts now try wabfab.

 

any update? How did this go for you? now installed?
