Wheel Fitment on a Taco?

1st off I have searched, I have a taco and realize most here have 4runners. But I see many do the brake upgrades which I want to do. Mine is a 98 extra cab came with 15" stock, and my braking sucks out loud. So going to a 16 or even 17 inch rim is imperative. I like the look of the newer tacoma tundra and fj rims(some are 16x7.5) I also like the older land cruiser rims.I have read tons of info on this but it seems all the data goes from 95-97 to 99 and up is the 98 a bastard year.

I want to run with 285/75R 16 or a 305/70R 16 and at least the pre 03 tundra brakes. I realize I may need to have my uppers shaved or go with a uniball set up for extra room, but will this all be in vain? Ebay and the like have these style rims for sale all the time and fairly cheap so I wouldnt mind going oem on this( you know what I mean) Basically from back spacing to brake clearance( i figure that would be fine if I went with the tundra rims) I am lost.

I cant lock down the answers i need on this so any help would be great.
